Hanfu is the true traditional chinese dress. Chinese been wear hanfu since ancient time, until destroy by Qing dynasty manchu pipul.

Hanfu influence is far and wide. Japanese kimono was influenced by hanfu from Tang dynasty when japan and Tang dynasty had close interaction.

Ming dynasty hanfu influences korean hanbok when korea was a vassal state of Ming.

Aint nobody likes Qing dress which was forced on the chinese population. Its no surprising tat chinese want to revive the true traditional dress of the chinese pipul.

in taiwan, young taiwanese don't care about reviving hanfu dress because chinese culture has nothing to with taiwan.

vietnamese people are very proud of aodai even though it's inspired by manchu banner dress.

This is a fallacy. Han is ethno-ethnicity aka race above race. Han is bound by "Y-chromosome haplogroup O2-M122", a common DNA marker in Han Chinese.

If u do not understand, just put it this way:
Our full genetic is 100% or 1 full pie.
You have 30% of A DNA marker, 20% of B DNA marker, 50% of C DNA marker. It varies to each individual.

All Chinese, all humans are amalgam of something.

In fact, most Chinese Malaysians do not even know wtf is Han until recently. You know what I mean if you are Chinese Malaysians. That is "race above race" in work.

It is both. Many Manchu Chinese nowadays have Han genes, despite claiming to be Manchu.
Somewhere down its lineage, there was a Han in its family. Most of the current Manchu nowadays are "mixed".
And if you ask them on Manchu culture, they will go speechless.

The Han thing is not as important as some of you would like to think of. Read my previous posts. The gov't didn't promote "it" coz they do not want to piss off the minorities. In fact, according to the constitution, Han chauvinism is criticized... even in Mao's period. The gov't let the private industry to deal with it, just like the recent H&M drama "cotton ban"... let the consumers to decide.

I'm one of the few persons who criticized the Chinese designers for not doing more for Han clothes.

You can see A LOT of tv drama and programs with Han clothes. MSM media like to make the Han clothes look like dying bcoz it is called make news and sell news... $$$

During the "rapid growth" period or after 1949 being poor and shet, no one cares about culture strength, entertainment, leisure. As the middle class and wealth grew, ppl demand for more culture strength, entertainment, leisure.

Yes. My mom used to call Chinese as Tong yan. Sometimes Kong Fu yan (Guangdong). I'm Canto, btw.

As I get older, I have more understand of it.

In school time, every Chinese person speaks Canto, hence they are all Chinese, in my eyes. I only learn Mandarin as I get older in high school. And even then, I do not know there are thousands or hundreds of different Chinese languages/dialects. I only learned that in my mid 20s. China = Europe

These countries have "linkage" with each others. JP didn't preserve CN culture. JP has some elements of CN culture. CN culture is well preserved in CN.
There is no JP without the existence of CN.

Shinto (JP religion) has elements of CN's Buddhism.

and in taiwan, the so called last bastion of chinese culture, there is no hanfu revival at all. hanfu revival only happen in china and supported by xi jinping.

Hanfu revival is a recent trend among some young Chinese who are heavily influenced by what they see on their TV or movies. You know all those wuxia of fantasy TV series or movie costumes where it is beautiful to look at but extremely unpractical. It was not what average Han chinese wear in ancient time as most people are not rich enough to own silk. Most people are farmers and those long flowing robes are totally useless to farmers.

The modern qipao and cheongsam originated from the Qing/Manchu dynasty. However, is it solely a Manchu culture or a combination of Manchu Han culture? The Manchu qipao actually incorporated a lot of designs from the Ming dynasty dress especially the ladies. If you want to see how a real hanfu looks like back in Ming dynasty, you can look at the ladies wedding dress of Baba Nyonya. It is a close representation of how Ming dress looks like during Ming dynasty. The modern qipao was made popular by Shanghai tailors after the fall or Qing dynasty. The Manchu dress was tightened and modernise. Different versions of qipao was created and was also widely worn and even become school uniform for girls in the early 20th century until WW2.

However, things changed after WW2. China fell into the hands of CCP and qipao was cast aside for a few decades and solely replaced by Mao suits. Mainland Chinese only started to wear them back in the 80's when the country start to open up. That is why if you ask the youngsters in China today, they will say qipao is not Chinese national dress because the whole of China was left out when qipao become popular and symbolised Chinese national costume in the 60's.

The qipao become popular worldwide thanks to World of Suzie Wong and HK. From the 60's until the 90's, HK was representing the culture of Chinese all over the world. The Shanghainess tailors who created the modern qipao moved to HK and they modernise the qipao further by making them more figure hugging and sexier. The world of Suzie Wong reinforce the image of qipao and a lot of Chinese ladies other than those from mainland China start to wear a more figure hugging qipao. By the 70's and 80's, non-mainland Chinese were influenced by TVB and you'll see a lot of their actresses will wear elaborated designed qipao during CNY. The Miss HK pageant with their modern designs of HK made qipao the ultimate dress for a lot of Chinese ladies. Before this trend was started by HK, most Chinese ladies do not wear qipao during CNY. It was actually an everyday wear. If you don't believe, try to find old photos of Chinese ladies in the 50's or 60's and you'll notice a lot of them. A lot of Chinese teachers were also wearing them in the 60's and 70's.
