i have decided i want to learn how to use linux and setting up my own server.

obviously buying a new full fledge server costs more money than i am willing to pay for a hobby, and most of the pcs out there comes with windows preinstalled anyway

i was wondering would raspberry be a good device to buy for this purpose? its cheap, small and linux can be installed on it, if some day i am interested i might start learning how to use raspberry OS as well!

Just dual boot it. Don't need a dedicated machine just for Linux

just create a trial GCP or AWS account for the server. No need to fork out any money.

As above or run a virtual machine on your PC - Hyper-V (part of Windows) or Virtualbox (free for private use). Learn the basics first and then buy a single board computer if you want to run servers 24/7.

If you prefer the Debian variant, then Ubuntu, Pop OS!, Linux Mint.

If you prefer the Red Hat (RHEL) variant, then Centos, Fedora.

If you prefer the Arch Linux variant, then Manjaro, EndeavourOS.

Get a spare hard disk and install Linux on it. Then you can dual-boot, means you can run Windows and Linux depends on which OS you select during system startup.

If your objective is server oriented, it makes sense to use dedicated hardware like a raspberry pi instead of a VM. I guess you want to turn off your workstation more frequently than your server.

I'm running one Rpi4 and one Rpi3 at home, both with DietPi linux.

Just register with Amazon AWS and look for AMI (Amazon Machine Image) options that are compatible with their Free Tier package.

You can use it completely free for 12 months.

If you want something local, just get a Raspberry Pi 4 B.
