hurrayy, my parents the koi pond at my parents house next door has finally finished....
water has been running since before hari raya. i have no experience in ponds but ample experience in fishkeeping in aquariums.
what kind of fish do you guys use to speed up the biological buildup and to test the water?

You can buy cheap koi and let it stay in the pond.

To accelerate the biological system you can also buy those good bacteria from fish shop. Normally 1 litre bottle around 40-50.

KOIs shops also got like arowana in OKR, Taman Desa.

More tips can check www.koi.com.my

Anyway, congrats.....!!!show us some pics..

Used to keep Japanese Koi for 3 years in 2000. My pond was 7x5x6ft (depth). Please never guessing your water parameters.

To have healthy fish below are good water parameters:

1. Carbonate Hardness (KH) > 6 dH to maintain alkalinity of water to avoid pH crash which will kill fish immediately

2. Ammonia must be 0 ppm

3. Nitrite must be 0 ppm

4. Nitrate < 80 ppm

I do feel that Carbonate Hardness is the most important. Most of the time people say their fish die when they change water. This is due to very
low carbonate hardness. When new water is introduced (our tap water has low KH), pH will drop suddenly. (0.5 pH drop will stop fish gill to function and
fish cannot breath). Other than that, somehow KH affects your biological filter effectiveness.

Go buy water parameter measurement kits and learn how to adjust parameters if found out of above requirement.... most people buy pH measurement drops. They
don't even know what to do if pH is not 7..

After I learned all these, my water quality become better and the fish flourish.. Just my 2 cents... (later is somebody interested, we can learn advanced techniques... PP bomb)

If your biological filter is working well. Add a UV light (sold in most koi shop) to kill/sterilize algae... I installed the UV light
right after my pump in those days..

OR advanced method that I did lotsa time with great success, PP bomb but very2 dangerous and you have to know what you doing.
Potassium Permanganate treatment with Hydrogen Peroxide... water will be fresh like rain water and fish appetite will go crazy... not
to mention their color... It is a very dangerous, several hobbyists kill their fish so do your research b4 trying...

My father has a koi pond that take up half his car porch. We are considering of building one of our own too but now, our current house has limitations.

We have space around the house but not suitable to build koi ponds. On our right side is the garden but beneath the garden is the tangki najis pipes all going out, so no digging there.

On our right side is a shaded area with tiled. We paid a lot for building this shade and tile so cannot break it. I was wondering if we can erect a pond from wall up and put a tampered glass to see the fish because we cannot dig.

Does many people do that?

Hi,

Noticed from your photos that your pond is not dig into the ground but rather built-up.
Can you show me a picture of your entire pond and garden?
How big is your pond? How deep?
How much did it cost you? Built yourself or hire professional?

Latiff, what material does u used as the finishing on the pond?
1) I am looking into fiber glassing (black) but my contractor does not know how to do, I end up plaster with black cement.
2) What do you use to cover the filter? Wood? Do you know where I can get this?
Do any gurus can comment on this?

Anybody are a member of koi.com.my? I tried to sign up but it failed. Hopefully someone can contact the administrator of koi.com.my and inform them of the service outage.

I also intend to rear koi in my house compound outdoor but on fibreglass tank. Want to avoid hassle of starting this new hobby.
