Yup, certain mobo only could accept flashing to EFI. But the shop doesn't reveal it. Maybe afraid on license,or about 'business secret'.. brows.gif
But the clone could run retail mac os x, and also could be updated via software update, without kernel panic.
*
I think shop is bluffing u. No need to flash bios to EFI unless the mobo does not support AHCI. EFI on OSX86 is on software level. Only thing some people do is change to AHCI in the bios to make it as closely to as a Mac since real Macs use AHCI (instead of ATA for hard disk). Enabling AHCI makes it easier for updates, compatibility, etc etc.

You can still install OSX without AHCI enabled but you need to install the right options (for example: ATA kexts) for those distros (Kalyway, aitKos, XxX, etc)

Update : My bad. You can do ACPI modification to bios if you want to. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=142434 so no more business secret. whistling.gif

yeah thats the few versions i see throughout the web...mobo wise, gigabyte or asus are mostly recommmended...but i personally opt for asus (dont know why blink.gif )...maybe a P5x one...as for the graphics, i have read that 7xxx/8xxx are more compatible compared to 9xxx, is that true
*
yes it's true about the 9xxx. I'm using a good old Asus P5K with 8600gts. There's a thread in insanelymac's forum that even post bios mod for Asus p5q biggrin.gif if you wanna go hardware level and use boot-132 with retail install like skitZo`s suggestion rclxms.gif

thanks dude..i tried download it, but something wrong with the patcher. Have u tried it before?
*
Your welcome biggrin.gif About the bios patcher, frankly, I've not tried it because you can also do it on software level (Boot 132 method). To do bios modding, you will of course need the right bios and for right motherboard. Most of them recommend a Gigabyte.

Alternatively, you can also do it on software level using Boot-132 method, install retail osX, do a DSDT patch and then update from apple site biggrin.gif

some recommended reading:

Hardware compatibility list @ the infamous osx86project site: http://wiki.osx86project.org
insanely Mac forums : insanelymac.com
dfe boot-132 : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=114834&st=0
All in one EFI-v9 install kit : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=142628
Some readymade DSDT files for popular motherboards : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=114834 (time saver rclxms.gif )
PCWiz site under software and hardware section : http://pcwizcomputer.com

I know it can be pain to read but at least you are prepared to do anything crazy tongue.gif

Me got suckered into buying a Dell Mini 9 at Maxis today doh.gif might as well try to make one hackintosh with it. Will post some pix and info on install when I get the unit biggrin.gif

LOL yeah, you bought the Dell Mini 9 eh, let us know the good results, manage to install retail on it? Was planning to get it too but the price is way too expensive. Are you gonna change the SSD to a bigger capacity disk?

Keep us updated ya.

Cheers!
*
Well definately keep you guys posted brows.gif

What I found out from Dell US site is that the cheapest for the Dell Mini 9" which is going for around US350, is the basic Linux version that only comes with 1GB & 4GBSSD. No bluebooth, no cam and WWan(3G). Maxis' package comes with 'almost' full spec ( 1GB, 8gb SSD, bluetooth, wwan & 0.3 cam), so it totals up to about USD500. Right now Maxis is offering RM89x24 for Chinese New Year promo. RM240 savings rclxms.gif so I took the deal.

I asked Maxis if Dell will do upgrades. They only said upgrading the ram is possible. For the SSD, looks like I have to go to my regular shop at Low Yat or buy from e-shop. I feel like getting the 32GB leh. Sure pokai wan and have to visit mamak shop often laugh.gif

Yeah i think you should upgrade to at least a 32gb ssd. Which shop in Low Yat does sell the ssd. If you find one do let me know ya.
No one wants to special order for me the 32gb mini ssd at Low Yat cry.gif So I will have to order it myself. Keeping my finger's crossed if it arrives smile.gif

Meantime, I got OSX 10.5.5 running successfully on the Dell Mini 9 off an external hd. Wah beh tahan liao. biggrin.gif Here's what I manage to get working and not:

Intel GMA950 - working
Bluetooth - working
Wireless - working
LAN Network - working
Maxis Broadband(WWAN) - working
WebCam built-in - working
SD Reader - haven't installed drivers yet. Need to test it out
GPS - haven't test out the hack yet. Need to experiment. (GPS works on Windows XP)
Sleep - not working

90% full blown hackintosh thumbup.gif

Showed it to my mac buddy. He was drolling laugh.gif

guys, am downloaded ideneb 10.5.5. but having trouble when the disk verification. download using freedownload manager and burn at 4X speed. have anybody face the same issue.

for AMD, which one is the best distro?

and on dual boot, what is the best method to do it? thanks a lot guys.
*
hmm... U can try using another burner software (i use imgburn with VSO engine) or use another drive and see if you get similiar results. As for dual boot, I just leave it as the default darwin boot for dual boot. Too lazy to modify it laugh.gif

Thanks for the quick reply, friend want to sell a Mac Box set very cheap to me and since my ancient Mac cannot use, i start think of building a Hackintosh. Ok, how about about the graphic cards, only nvidia? not ATI? Thinking of HD4850 but if cannot whats the best nvidia to run video editing programs?
Err... any problems to work with Wacom Bamboo Fun?
*
Some good news if you are willing to wait for 10.5.7 to be release soon. There is HD4850 support coming for it. not perfect but works. smile.gif netkas.org posted some test on the 4850and 10.5.7 will support Core i7 too. woot!

Come to think of it, might as well go for the 9800gtx since it works brilliantly.
