P/S - Sorry don't wanna create another thread for similar reasons. Just want to ask everyone here, is looking up "red people" like those local instagram influencers with more than 50k+ followers a good start for my portrait photography ?

I ask because I just got to know this female influencer with 50k followers on instagram, and we agreed that I'll take pictures of her for free and in return she will share to instagram, would this kind of method be a good start to build popularity and getting people to know what I do ?

humble opinion, if you just do simple or straight forward portrait, chances are you might just go f2.8 all the way and bokeh all the background.

i know some typically take public area like putrajaya building corridor/ garden/ parks for outdoor, and some resorted i hotel room or private location.

it really dpeends on what you want tho..

That's what I thought too, yes I am taking 1.8 - 2.8, so technically my photo background is going to be blurred and bokeh, so locations doesn't really matter much. But one thing that matters would be, I hope to choose a location where there isn't much crowd and/or abandoned places, but in johor bahru hardly got any places like that to meet my requirements.

i think your concern should be safety of you and your client.
abandoned places while its good for photography but lookout for dangerous encounter (human, poisonous animals and bugs).

best is you speak to owner of private property to allow your shooting, safer.

I agree, but is there a way to start out when it comes to looking for abandoned / private properties ? So far my shooting locations is either the beach or a big park.

Hello, I recently started shifting my focus to Portrait photography, as I'm a freelancer, I want to ask for opinion and advice, for sifus who's been in this line for a long time, when it comes to choosing locations, how do u all go about that ? What I mean is, I always have to fret about locations for every new client because I do not own a studio, and sooner or later I'll be out of options thinking where can I go to take portrait photoshoot outdoors, or even indoors for that matter. So how should I go about this ?
*
now cannot do outdoor shoot iirc

but before you can, you can always scout new locations for photoshooting

big parks, beach, streets, paddy field, schools, universities are all good locations for photoshooting

sometimes, with permission, you can be allowed to have free shoots at buildings like highest floor of car park of a shopping mall, or private places.

just talk to the owner, you will be surprised by how many willing to let you have shooting going on at their place as long as you promote/tag them if u ever gonna post them out

for indoors, usually you are required to pay. just call the owner/cafe and ask. cafes photography charges ranging from rm50-500 (at least at klang valley)

Which area you are in?

Usually for higher end places, very susah. But for "abandoned" or older malls, usually can biggrin.gif

Ask their security guard or even management. Should do the job. If you are in Klang Valley, pm me directly. I have a list of place you can go.

Is a good start to get know more other ppl around the influencers. I also interest if have any chances tongue.gif
Just don't simply chase to build popularity, sharpen your skills is more important.
Let say many instagram influencers know you but they see your photos normal, think they will find you and work together in long term?
