Hi all, i have a 5 year old Joven storage water heater and it has suddenly stopped working. The RCCB is tripped, I am suspecting that the heating element needs replacement. Has anyone encountered this before and if so, how did you fix it?
Did you have to change the thermal fuse and thermostat/thermowatt at the same time - i heard that the replacement element comes in a set with these 2 items.

Appreciate all info on the solution, cost of the fix and the service provider that you engaged.

On a side note, if you have seen this job being done would you say its a DIY-able for someone with basic electrical wiring abilities? Cheers and Thanks

N/B : I have reposted this on the kopitiam forum as well.

Mine is Elton not Joven but the problem is similar. When the electrical circuit trips then it is likely the heating coil shorted. You can replace the heating coil. As per the cost that depends on the size of your storage unit. Mine is 82L and the heating coil is about RM450 if I am not mistaken.

Recently I have another Elton tank leaked. I called this specialist to come and check. This company do both Elton and Joven repairs and new installations. The site visit is RM120 but if you proceed with the repair service that RM120 is counted to offset the repair/installation service.

In my case I need a new tank for this leaky one. The installation fee is RM400 so they will minus RM120 from the RM400. And plus the cost of the new unit of course.

The company is BMS. You can search Lazarda for BMW-online. In your case since it is likely that only heating coil to be replaced you just need to pay for the heating coil and the RM120 if I am correct. You can try to contact them if you don't have any other contact.

However changing heating coil is not so difficult. Most electricians may be able to do it. Usually those that can do it will also sell those parts to you too. This is another option.

Very helpful info thanks. Mine is a 35L that cost ard RM700, if replacing the element is RM450 hv to consider vs total replacement. The replacement element is around RM130 on Lazada, but i am struggling to find the opener/element wrench. That socket wrench is being sold (absurdly) for RM169.

How old is your leaky tank bro?

My Elton comes with the house (provided by developer) about 7-8 years ago. Elton is actually more expensive than Joven and this Elton 23L model new set cost about RM785. Installation is about RM400. Don't forget replacing new heating coil won't cost much on installation. The new unit installation cost about 400 due to removing and installing of new bracket for the new unit. You may keep the old bracket if you buy the same replacement model but most people will just want to change everything new.

The technician told me that Elton is actually a "better" product than Joven but my Joven in my other house has already more than 15 years old and still fine but this Elton konked at half the age. I think it is a matter of luck and installation. I have a strange suspicion than the quality of work on my new house is far worse than my old house! My 82L which has heating coil faulty was found to install with a low quality socket that it "melted" and the original installer didn't even bother to remove the plastic wrapper from the water tank. The later may not have any impact on the unit but it just show you the lousy quality of work of the developer's contractor!

Solved / Update : The service technician from Joven came and found the heater element to be faulty. It was replaced and the storage water heater is working fine now. Total cost was RM180 - RM 80 service charge and RM100 for the replacement part.

Great job by the Joven Service Support team. If you have a simillar problem just call them @ 03-51626633 to schedule an appointment

Thanks to everyone who gave their input here.

No they did not drain it. They just asked for a cloth and it was moderately wet when when they handed it to me with the spoilt element. i think they took the old one out and put in the new one quickly.

Your BIL has the special tool to open the element? I did not attempt the job myself because i did not have this tool. and it costs more than double the cost of getting the joven technician to do the job doh.gif

I guess so but since their price is reasonable it's better to let them do it.

It is not the developer giving a lousy heater installation, the actual person who installed heater was 3rd party Plumber who

secured the Installation Project. Normally plumber will install the heater when the shower room is ready in early stage, some

dont even have electricity ( wiring not done at that stage ), so they fixed the heater with the plastic with it to protect the

heater from dust..I hope this will answer your doubts..wink.gif nod.gif

Good hypothesis but I have 5 heater storage units all with plastic wrappers removed except master bedroom's. Whatever the process there is a need to do a "clean up" to remove the wrapper anyway.

I have two houses and the older house at half the price of the one I stay now. The built quality of the old house is so much better. My new house has more leaks, more heater problems, poor workmanship than the old house.

No but it just show lousy work quality. Just like your gardener leaves shit all over your garden after doing work for you. Your plants won't die but you probably will if you see empty drinking water bottles, loose nails/stones/plastic wrapers etc lying around.

This also happened to me and I have to lecture my grass supplier before!

Hi I have a similar problem, question, I took a look at the warranty. It says that heating element has a warranty of 5 years. Was yours over the period already since they charged you?

Water heater warranty, regardless of brands, usually covers only the spare parts required, and not the manpower cost (service works & transportation) required to fix it, which is chargeable to u.
