settings/general/about/network provider lock

i believe that's there you look.

it should state 'no sim restrictions'

how to check ? may be we can learn something here.

Unlike iphones sold in US, all iphones sold in MY from telcos are sim-unlocked. what we worry is imei locked by telco if original buyer doesn't comply with contract
AFAIK, just get the seller to provide initial purchase receipt, some honest sellers will declare their telco set & a few won't.
also some seller will declare their sets are gift from company/individu. just ask them to proof.

this video explain what can u do to check & what can u do if u get telco lock phone.

tldr:
>ask for receipt
>check with Apple the serial number. whether it's telco phone or retail set

best way to get rid of telco lock issue is to sell it to Singapore / Thailand (other country). coz the telco lock is only for Malaysia sim (any sim). it will still work outside of Malaysia.

I think all msia telco is no sim lock. However, for those zerolution like plan where the phone is on installment, telco will lock it via imei if the contract owner failed to pay up.

If you are buying used, meet up at Switch or authorise center. then ask them to check. You can't go wrong.

Telco would only block a phone if the subscriber fails to pay his installments/dues as part of the contract. So you would never know if the phone is under contract unless you enquire with that particular telco. Only best way to be sure is asking for a receipt for the said phone.

Coming from my previous experience working at AAR and AASP, AAR does get stock from telco and sell them at full price without contract, when the customer brings their phone to AASP to check on their IMEI, AASP is able to tell the distributors/telco of the phone is from, so it is kinda hard to pin-point whether the phone is with or without a contract, best is you insist the resit from the seller.

Google leads me here while searching answer for the same question as TS. If I’m not wrong, that cross telco locking service was introduced for telcos to lock IMEI of phones reported stolen. In my opinion, whoever gives telcos green light to use the tool to deal with lease/installment plan defaulters/scammers should also come out with an inquiry service, especially considering that such scam has become fairly common.

Got such service in Garage sales or Shopee. Each check is RM 10 I think.
Best way is still to ask for receipt.

oh yeah, just noticed it too. there's a check service by shopee seller. but I still think it's better than asking for receipt since nowadays so many people can photoshop fake various receipt including fund transfer receipt.

this only valid provided at that time, the original user still paying the bill without fail, but once he/she missed the payment, telco will blocked the IMEI..if lucky only block IMEI phone still can use just cannot call or use data.

I suggest you insist for the original receipt. If it's from say shopee switch/machines, you can email customer support and show them the Order ID. Then you can verify if it's bought from them or not.

Make sure the Serial number checks out

There are 2 types of SIM locks. Those that can be checked online are those locked by Apple on behalf of operator. Malaysia iPhone all sim-unlock, so no need to check there if Malaysia unit.

Another type (specifically for Malaysia) is locked by MCMC, this lock only applicable to operator in Malaysia, they all work together to maintain one database to lock device based on IMEI - stolen, not paid installment etc.

So ask for receipt is the best way to overcome.

I actually signed up for iPhone 11 Pro in the past with for 24 months and then decided to sell the phone two months later. I didn’t know about this sim lock thing. And the buyer didn’t ask as well. But I paid all my instalments, in fact it just finished. XD.

But I think if you decide to buy telco set, most likely it will get blocked. Not everyone will pay off bills on time like me. Tsk.

Normally there is no telco-specific lock for Malaysian sets. You can try to ask Maxis but doubt it may help.

Anyway, other possibilities:-
- software issue. Try reset network settings.
- random bug. Try restarting the iPhone.
- your phone firmware is corrupted. only way is to do a factory reset.
- your other telco SIM card is faulty. Try a few other telco SIM cards to see if problem persists.
