Hi,

One of my friend asked, if we can choose gender before conceiving the child ? I heard it's possible. Can anyone share their experience or knowledge about the procedure, idea of cost, success rate, and any implications/side-effects for the mother ?

Yes you can choose gender with todays technology but it will have to be via IVF method.

This info is applicable for Thompson Hospital, Kota Damansara.

Cost wise IVF procedure is around RM15,000. Choosing the gender is an extra RM10,000.

Success rate for IVF is around 70%. Choosing gender will be 100% success rate. By choosing gender, doctor can also make sure the future baby will have no genetic disease inherited.

Regarding side effec4, I don't think there is any.

Take note the cost rate I stated above is from 2007. They might be the same now or might increase. And Thompson Hospital had been awarded best fertility hospital in the world before.

other hospital rate might be different.

It is not illegal. Religious wise, in Islam, the opinion is divided. One school of thought allow choosing gender, another does not allow. In Christianity, I think it is not even allowed to do IVF let alone choosing a baby gender.

Legally it is allowed in Malaysia. Religious wise, it is better to check with your religious leader.

You are correct on this but it also depends on the quality of sperms and eggs harvested and other factors as well. the 70% figure was a general and average out figure of the hospital stated.

As far as I know, it is not illegal to choose gender of baby. That is why fertility hospital can offered it.

Chipping in from recent experience:

Choosing gender explicitly is not allowed (to my knowledge). However in cases where PGT (pre-implantation genetic testing) is performed to test the embryo quality, you'll also get to know the gender.

Speaking from natural conceive here. I do keep track of my cycle closely so I can share based on my records.

I have read / research some articles, and it seems that you are more likely to conceive a female if you intercourse few days before ovulation; for males, intercourse closer to the ovulation period (on the day itself or something).

FTM with baby girl in the oven.....and based on my records, I intercoursed 3-4 days before ovulation. Not sure if it's coincidence or..

This involved FSH injection on a daily basis for 2 weeks and it is quite stressful for the female partner. Please ensure she is aware of this prior to embarking on this journey
