I want to add new toy to my Man Cave
Also in future teach my kid about coding
Anyone here expert in Lego Mindstorms ?

My question is this:
1) How long these toys can last before rosak ? especially the motors ? 3 years ? 5 years ?
2) Can I order separate spare parts if one part of my robot rosak via Lego ?
3) Where to buy ? I notice Lego shops like not offer this ? order online ?
4) My kid only < 5 years old, I want to wait another 3 more years, before I play with the robot than teach him how to play with it. Can the toy last another 3-5 years ?
5) Is it useful for kids to learn coding ?

I wanted to get these a long time ago. But then found the prices really crazy. I might as well just spend more time buying small cheap programmable controllers, small motors/ actuators and built/ code from it.

But what block programming do you use ?

unless you know Python or some software language, you can program.

How to do these by yourself ? where to get the motors and actuators ?
You need to know coding and CS in order to built code from it.

Newer version coming out to replace EV3. But covid may cause it to delay.

Buy a simple kit like this

https://shopee.com.my/%F0%9F%94%A5%F0%9F%94...0880.1825888472

And start learning from youtube. Should not be afraid of programming also. Tons of ready made codes that you can copy & paste from internet. Its not like 1980-1990s' where you still need to code manually from scratch.

So I have to do my own.

Sorry I am not from CS background

You should go to youtube and look at robotics for beginners. Or basic robotics. Also beginner robotic coding/ programming. Look and understand what is needed. Then plan how you wanna start. With Mindstorms you pay for convenience.

Anything you do from scratch will be hard. But the satisfaction is much more higher. Bragging rights is higher too. laugh.gif

i was a part time lego instructor. i taught kids age range from 5 to 11 last time.

1. depends on kids really. if just code, build and run.. can last more than that. if day day your kids pickup and throw, and break the parts.... well... tough luck mate. the oldest set that we had last time more than 5 years.

2. this one i donno.

3. not sure. but i am sure my boss can order a set for you.

4. why not buy later? maybe there would be new model coming out with new function later.

5. as in the real coding? heck no. but it teaches kid creativity, and logical thinking. which i think, playing chess would produce the same result.

heck even diy arduino kits is better, cheaper and more versatile.

Curios how much guys charge per hour ?

Yeah the lego can last 5 years but can the motor and program last that long ?

yes. the motor and program can last that long. i mean, why do you think they cant last that long? your tamiya can last long too if just kept in drawer.

its very simple programming. i dont even consider it programming though. and like i have said, arduino kit is a better option if really want a programming toys.

last time, i remember its few thousand to send kid to classes. but i think its for whole year. almost similar to gym fees i recall. but you dont the set. you come to our training centre. class for 2 hours per session.

#1. Motor last around half year - 1 year for our use case. sweat.gif

#2. Can but it take long time to get once order yet expensive cus Lego is branded

#3. Shopee. etc

#4. Lego block is still fine, motor hard to say.
If your place is located in Kepong or Semenyih, you may come visit Advaspire Robotics Academy, our center have these Lego robots for teaching purpose,
so you no need spend big or feel burden in preparation.

#5. It help train on logical thinking and problem solving. why not.
if near us, request for free trial to see if your kids like it or not la.
honestly when I saw the students' passionate and their creative-built robots, it's really no regret to create
this learning space for them.
