MELAKA: A 27-year-old female customer service officer at a popular fast food chain lost RM18,000 in a postal scam here.
Melaka Commercial Crime chief Superintendent E. Sundra Rajan said the victim from Bukit Katil panicked when she received a call from a courier service claiming she had a parcel sent to her that contained prohibited materials.
"The victim told the caller that she was not expecting a delivery of any parcel.
"However, the caller claimed that the parcel to the victim contained documents of a man from Seremban and there was a police case against her before redirecting the call to 'Negri Sembilan police'," he said on Friday (Jan 8).
Supt Sundra Rajan said a bogus police officer later answered before alleging that the victim had an arrest warrant issued against her and that the former could help sort out the matter.
The warrant, he said, was allegedly issued to the victim for her alleged involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.
"The victim was then instructed to deposit the amount into two separate bank accounts as inducements to settle the case," he said.
Supt Sundra said the victim had deposited the amount in four transactions on Jan 6.
She then lodged a police report at Ayer Keroh police station on the same day after realising she had been cheated.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping and a fine if convicted.
