Maybe the best news of 2020: Apple Car coming in 4 years. Tesla gonna have worthy competition, and car batteries will be much better than today. thumbsup.gif

"SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc is moving forward with self-driving car technology and is targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The iPhone maker’s automotive efforts, known as Project Titan, have proceeded unevenly since 2014 when it first started to design its own vehicle from scratch. At one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on software and reassessed its goals.

Doug Field, an Apple veteran who had worked at Tesla Inc, returned to oversee the project in 2018 and laid off 190 people from the team in 2019.

Since then, Apple has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said, asking not to be named because Apple’s plans are not public.

Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with rivals such as Alphabet Inc’s Waymo, which has built robo-taxis to carry passengers for a driverless ride-hailing service.

Central to Apple’s strategy is a new battery design that could “radically” reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle’s range, according to a third person who has seen Apple’s battery design."

It's Apple so it gonna be expensive. Hope by then the technology is more cheaper than now. Maybe there can be an SE model, also Pro and Pro Max. thumbup.gif

Macworld.co.uk says:
QUOTE
A team of tech analysts from Jefferies & Co have thrown their hats in the ring, suggesting what they predict will be the price of Apple's iCar. The team suggested that the iCar is likely to have a price tag of around $55,000, which translates to around £36,000 at the time of writing. That makes it almost half the price of Tesla's Model S in the UK, which could give the fruit-shaped company a much-needed advantage in the electric car industry.

More Apple car news:
QUOTE
Rumors are continuing to trickle in about Apple's long-expected car project. On Wednesday, CNBC reported that Apple is close to finalizing a deal for an Apple Car to be manufactured at Kia's assembly plant in West Point, Georgia, an hour southwest of Atlanta. Apple is a famously secretive company, and I don't have any inside information about Apple's plans. But I'm skeptical that whatever product Apple ultimately unveils will match CNBC's description of it.

According to CNBC, the Apple Car, due out in 2024 or 2025, will be "fully autonomous." One source told CNBC that Apple is aiming to make "autonomous, electric vehicles designed to operate without a driver and focused on the last mile." CNBC predicts that the cars could be used for food delivery or in a robotaxi service.

If true, that would represent a dramatic departure for Apple. A central feature of Apple's corporate culture is that it sells hardware products directly to users. There are technology companies like IBM and Microsoft that focus on selling to business customers. There are technology companies—from Uber to Google—that focus on building services.

But while Apple does run some services and does of course sell products to businesses, neither activity has been Apple's focus. Apple's flagship products—the original Macintosh, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch, and so forth—have always been designed as consumer-focused hardware products. It's hard to believe that Apple, already taking a risky leap into a new industry, would simultaneously toss aside a core aspect of its business philosophy.

Now we know Apple car won't be Korean.
If Apple has plans to build an electric autonomous vehicle, it won't be with Hyundai Motor Group. On Sunday, Bloomberg reported that "people familiar with the matter" told the publication that "Apple paused discussions with Hyundai and Kia weeks ago".

Apple's highly secretive vehicle plans—codenamed Project Titan—have driven a lot of speculation over the years. The latest bout of rumormongering began in December 2020, when Reuters, citing anonymous sources, claimed that Apple was going to start building and selling a car by 2024.

The rumors shifted to a higher gear in early January, when the Korea Economic Daily reported that Apple had been in talks with the Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group. This was confirmed by Hyundai to other outlets, albeit vaguely; the company told CNBC that Apple had been in talks with other automakers as well and that no deals had been signed.

Last week, speculation had reached the point where we were told that "fully autonomous" Apple Cars would go into production at Kia's factory in West Point, Georgia, within the next few years. However, the report also suggested—improbably, in our view—that these Apple Cars could be destined for life as robotaxis or even delivering packages.

Hyundai and Kia stocks both fell following the denial. As for a possible Apple Car, I'll remain skeptical until Apple shows it off on stage.
Hope it comes with battery and not sold separately.

And need a charger too. I think Tesla buyer has to buy the charger separate. Apple should fix that.

Now as we are still waiting for the Apple Car, a Chinese engineer tried to hand Apple's trade secrets over to a Chinese autonomous driving tech company. Let's hope we can still see the latest car technology from Apple Car soon.
