Just heard the news. But its just an announcement so the actual product will take some time before entering our markets...
The EOSIDsMKIII is truly a moster and will be entering the realm of the smaller Hasselblads and Mamiya's. Price is gonna be RM28,999 Again I think since it was mentioned that its priced similarly to the EOS1DsMKII. EOS 40D is a nice and majopr improvement from the 30D(I just got mine 2 months ago Good news to CANON fans as well, is the released of 3 new lenses. Woo Hoo...! THanks for the new TS. |

40D really quite tempting with the 3rd gen cmos. Will put on a good fight with the nikon D80.

QUOTE(vpire @ Aug 20 2007, 04:37 PM) I don't know about that. I'd put the D80 in a different class than with the 40D. The specs speak for itself. It will be interesting to see how NIKON would respond. A replacement for the D200 which was supposedly the rival of the 30D and maybe a full-frame Pro-DSLR would be great news.... |

You are right too, supposing the D80 should be fighting with 400D.Nikon will have to come up with something to couteract the canon monster. D200 should be full frame DSLR, they should have replacement model for D200 since this one had been exist for almost 2 years already. Looks like canon will lead the pro market for awhile. |

Rumours from the leaked Olympus marketing PDF file states that there will be a 40D from Canon and a D300 from Nikon that goes head to head with the E-P1. I'm sure Nikon will release details of their D300 soon.By the way, D80 is way out of the league of 40D. |

Although 40D is officially announced , the 30D still can't be seen in shelves thought !
Always tempted to try the 30D which even Canon booth doesnt promote it . Anyway , anyone know the price for EOS 5D ? heard that it's 35mm full frame. Saw a korean-like lady holding EOS 5D with 70-200mm F2.8 lens if not mistaken. ( for sure it's constant aperture size as it's damn huge ! ) |

QUOTE(Andy0625 @ Aug 20 2007, 06:49 PM) Although 40D is officially announced , the 30D still can't be seen in shelves thought ! Most probably they are obsoleting 30D, that's why you can't see them in shelves anymore. Always tempted to try the 30D which even Canon booth doesnt promote it . Anyway , anyone know the price for EOS 5D ? heard that it's 35mm full frame. Saw a korean-like lady holding EOS 5D with 70-200mm F2.8 lens if not mistaken. ( for sure it's constant aperture size as it's damn huge ! ) Expect loads of 2nd hand 30D in the market and that should be good news for you. Don't compare with FF lar. Both are different levels. When got new FF like the 1Ds Mark III, then you will compare with MF. I also saw my friend's wedding photographer using 5D to shoot. He's lucky to get such a pro user. Some charge damn high but only use 400D or D70s. |

When using FF, cheap lens is not a good alternative at all... All sub par lens are not to be tolerated. So if you want to go FF, perhaps should start collecting some L lens now. |

Even here, the EOS 5D Body is around RM8K+, the EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS is RM6K+. So you more or less are paying for a EOS 1D mkIII Body only price.

The 5D, 30D should face another round of price cut.
The 1DsMkII & 1DMkIIn still got demand. Anyhow, Canon just brought the "appeal to spend" to the next level. |

I'd say this 40D is the ACTUAL UPGRADE from 20D.
Digic III, 3" LCD, live view, cross type sensor on all 9 focus points, 6.5fps, 10mp with newer coating to reduce noise... uber l33t |

Sony just announced a 12.5mpx sensor with 10fps. I got a feeling that's what the D200 replacement model will be using.

QUOTE(CompMac @ Aug 21 2007, 02:31 PM) Actually there is a big difference between 12-bit and 14-bit processing. 14-bit data processing has 4 times the information than 12-bit data processing. There is a huge difference when it comes to photo processing with that 2 extra bits. You'll get higher dynamic range and better noise control just to say the least.Correct me if I'm wrong. However, difference to our eyes is significant or not .... is different issue. If you think that there is no difference to the eyes, then you don't need a dSLR, right? Might as well just stick to camera phones since they use maybe 8-bits processing only and won't be different with 12-bits, right? |

ya the extra 2 bit will give 4 times more colour rending. but we hardly see the difference. maybe useful in medium format.
same thing here. do you always notice the difference of a 5ms lcd and 2ms lcd? This post has been edited by ageell2004: Aug 22 2007, 07:35 AM |

QUOTE(turbovtec @ Aug 22 2007, 07:32 PM) i thinks the price of wedding photography should not be derive fully on the gear. should be more to the photographer experience in wedding...how to compose, pose, candid, etc. the price is being paid for the quality, experience that the photographer had achieve not what gear is he/she is using.. Well, I've seen the quality too. Of course it is worth the money he paid. What I'm comparing is price wise to be the same, you might not get such photographers who invest that much into their equipment. I've seen people paying RM8k for a package and get a photo shoot using a 400D. Which would you prefer? 5D or 400D?QUOTE(yewkhuay @ Aug 22 2007, 07:52 PM) I think it's just a metaphor. |

There will be always new model coming up. Just choose one that fit you now and some room for extension. |

What vincent said is very true. Get one camera that suit you for the moment. The longer you wait the more models will be coming out. So when will you get your cam then? |

Pro Photographers might still go for the highend CANON. Especially companies with unlimited budget. Besides, the 21mp is creeping up digital backs territory aint it, so the 1Ds MkIII is still a good if not an outright better bet than the D3. But the D3 is good in terms of pricing. Lets see how CANON replaces the 5D.....

Both of them have their own good points as far as brand enthusiasts are concerned. If you ask me, I won't go for the EOS 1DS Mark III, the 1D Mark II or Mark III will still be my choice becoz I want performance and durability in my camera body. Drop a 40D or D300 on the floor and off to the manufacturer you go! |

From the looks of it, Canon might adopt the strategy like when they replaced EOS 300D with 350D : Something big is going to happen and 5D is gone for good OR Canon might do it like they did with 400D : They came out with 400D and say it's not a replacement to 350D due to the increase of MP, extra functions, bla bla bla. We can be looking at 6.5 frames per second, 3" LCD with 22MP EOS 6D with DIGIC III? |

Numbers doing down within the EOS range are towards professional models, numbers going up within the same series are entry level models and semi-professional models.

no doubt Nikon D300 beat Canon 40D hands down on paper spec.
this may cause Canon to launch... may be 41D end of year to counter back?... wait and see ler... Forget about 1DMKIII and D3, only the very rich and company can own one of these... Added on September 3, 2007, 5:34 pm QUOTE(CompMac @ Aug 21 2007, 04:32 PM) Your calculation is correct but your assumption is wrong. There is a huge difference when it comes to photo processing with that 2 extra bits. You'll get higher dynamic range and better noise control just to say the least. Just ignore about the math... engineer can sell whatever good theory behind it, for consumer, the result count, right? If you think that there is no difference to the eyes, then you don't need a dSLR, right? Might as well just stick to camera phones since they use maybe 8-bits processing only and won't be different with 12-bits, right? someone posted 14-bit vs 12-bit photo in dpreview. really, if you don't tell me which is 14 bit and which is 12 bit, i can't barely differentiate them even at 100% enlarge. while 12bit to 8bit is obvious though.. so more like marketing gimmick afterall as the result isn't obvious. May be 16-bit will have difference... the extra 2 bit in 14-bit is more like noise. This post has been edited by mroctopus: Sep 3 2007, 05:37 PM |

I think a lot of people got confused. When you buy an EOS, you are not buying the camera alone. You are buying the whole EOS systems. From the lens till the battery pack.
If we compare specs on paper, i think even a normal point and shoot may outshine any Canon EOS DSLR. Any the image quality depends a lot of the lens quality, not just the camera. Therefore, before you buy any DSLR, think whether you will want to be serious into it. If you forever just use the kit lens, I think you should start with an used DSLR like the D70 or the EOS 350D. |

when i was playing with this camera, non of the sales dare to come near me... weird... maybe they dunno anything about cameras... except for the more senior person like george... 40D dont even have a 1 nanosecond not being touched by a person. couldnt get a chance to hold it myself. |

QUOTE(lordcarl @ Sep 17 2007, 02:32 AM) Sorry. Re-checked the reviews. AF-On button to auto-focus which drops the mirror momentarily to achieve focus and then lifts it again to restore the Live View. THanks for the heads up. I think my friend didn't try this when he tested the unit...... |

QUOTE(ifer @ Sep 16 2007, 10:26 PM) lying down cant meh? Live view is meant to remove the problem of taking pictures in weird angles. Usually macros or floor level shots which mostly consist of landscape or interior shots. You don't need the speed to capture these moments. If you use the live view on a dSLR just like on a P&S, then you are not smart enough to use a dSLR. Go back to P&S newbie.or squat or whatever gymnastic stuff that is needed. dont you guys think that liveview is abit hard to see? unless it is instant like how the viewfinder is... if there is event a 0.001 second delay... i think it will suck |

snowmei and robertngo: I experienced something similiar.
Tried the 40D in Live View. Moved the AF rectangle upwards onto a brightly lit, highly contrasty saleswoman in the Canon booth. Pressed the AF On on her. It didn't focus. Pressed it a few times, still didn't focus. Her face filled exactly the rectangle. Asked the salesman why. He played with it a bit, then he pressed the AF On on another person, and it focused! The rectangle was in the same area. He then turned it out of focus, and did it again. It looked quick in the short moment that the mirror blanked out. Click, blackout, reappear in focus. "Uh why ah justnow cannot?" "Oh this one pre-production model mah..." I wonder if moving the AF rectangle to somewhere where it does not have cross-type sensors will affect its performance. It was horizontally one thirds up and vertically center, which should be very safe! I hope they fix it before releasing it, unlike the 1D Mark III. Even in standard shopping mall hallway lighting, it was disappointingly backfocusing (when not in Live View!) with the 24-105mm F4L IS USM. |

When there's new feature, people will always try to make use of it
@albnok you mean the 40D was back-focusing? it's canon nia, why am I not surprised. But I believe it has more to do with the lens than the body, canon is notorious with their lens focusing issue and QC. Besides, f4 isn't really gonna cut it indoor. |

40D? YL brought in just 5 40D'S and they all got sold within hours. my dad bought it.(if u want reviews, i can't give u coz i'm not very good in using DSLR, plus i just play with this baby onlylar, not seriously into it)
great camera, the ISO can max to 3200. took some pictures wif ISO 1600 without the speedlite flash, plus the lighting at the place was kinda dim. it came out great, noise level was minimal or none. if u r above 40 or u have "lou fa". the camera LCD is great. big enough for anyone to view the photos. They also have a function (which i forgot that is same as 1DSMKiii). there is also 2 RAW formats u can take wif the camera.( i prefer RAW coz u can edit it with photoshop) liveview? kinda nice feature, but no idea on why is included into this model (maybe it is made for taking pictures of big groups of plp at once) that's all. overall, the grip and the functions are great. great camera. |

So you're officially the 1st person here who/whos family owns a 40D. Hope to get more feedback from you regarding the autofocusing.great camera, the ISO can max to 3200. took some pictures wif ISO 1600 without the speedlite flash, plus the lighting at the place was kinda dim. it came out great, noise level was minimal or none. if u r above 40 or u have "lou fa". the camera LCD is great. big enough for anyone to view the photos. AlamakLor: Live View with swivel screen and contrast-detect AF (like digicams)? The Panasonic L10 has it. I honestly believe that is the true Live View champion which people just don't know about. Can't wait for some site to do a Live View shootout.
I got a cheap angle finder. Not the easiest thing to use, still, but easier than not having one at all. Feels like looking down a Twin Lens Reflex. But but but it was a Canon 24-105mm F4L IS USM! The 1D MkIII took a popularity hit because it wasn't so good with AF as the 1D MkII was. |
