QUOTE(PJng @ May 9 2022, 05:25 PM)
Does not auto clone it?  So need boot to recovery, or sometime PE to make as boot?
As know windows will auto create partition, 100MB and 517MB is windows auto create one
*
my last cloning using Acronis got some setting to set before cloning to make it bootable if not mistaken... should you re-check it again that all tick before cloning hmm.gif

but still prefer fresh install if the hardware not similar thou notworthy.gif

yeah, i had phobia for dead HDD too, hence i wont even dare to touch Seagate HDD lol

i haven't really tried dram-less SSD.
i could just stick with 870 QVO since it still have dram, and price is same as those dram-less SSD

officially Samsung cutting the price now https://www.samsung.com/sg/memory-storage/s...tb-mz-77q8t0bw/
damn, raid 0 on 4 of these drive gonna be fun

Wow, this is too good to be true, there has to be some catch to this right lol.

It's TLC, and has DRAM for only 899?

TBW endurance is also decent at 2240 TBW for 4 TB.

EDIT:- One review on Amazon says it's basically the same internals as the Crucial MX500 4TB drive. Wow, makes me a bit more confident to buy now.

also the SSD Scope wear-out indicator seems grey hmm.gif would be nice if can be in my Raid sweat.gif

i think this bug affects more than that. i have read user comments that stated the os boot time became longer than two minutes. this is just bad. who would have guessed that after so many years, when we are already used to under 30-sec boot (even with sata ssds), we are back again to the era of hdd boot time.
*
that's bad doh.gif

This particular model has a bad rep deswai its cheaply sold
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/pny-xlr8-...most-80-percent

PNY, ADATA and even Kingston(unless its cheapo media) are brands I would keep away for their tendency to steeply downgrade memory parts with drastic performance hits.
*
Owh I thought PNY mid range brand sweat.gif never own one thou.. all my SSD are Samsung, Corsair & Crucial so far

Thinking to try WD Black & Seagate Firecuda but not yet buy any icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(1024kbps @ Oct 30 2023, 11:48 PM)
for back up, i always get additional HDD.
nowadays i just Toshiba canvio, my first canvio lasted really long iirc, it just recently died.

SSD can be costly and if i have to choose, i'd get Samsung only, second would be sandisk and kioxia.

And for general misconception of slow HDD transfer rate, the issue can be mitigated by enable write caching,
but it's very tricky to set up external HDD with write caching enabled because it's disabled by default, and you have to enable safety removal due to the write caching.
downside are:
1. shutdown PC may be slow due to windows last min write data to disk  sweat.gif
2. need combination of chipset drivers, usb hub to get it work...
3. caching might stop working if windows update screwed up  sweat.gif

for disk to disk copy i can manage to achieve 300MB/s (because copied to RAM first, write later, aka write caching.)

I have give-up on external HDD ranting.gif 2 of 2TB failed in storage in last 5 years... after long thinking I migrate to NAS sweat.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Oct 31 2023, 12:58 AM)
my answer above is mainly about data safety if you always carry the portable storage around. that's when shits usually happen.

luckily, speed is usually not an issue to me, be it hdd or ssd, as external/portable storage. as long as data is safe and intact, i'm fine haha
*
agreed... high risk carrying HDD around, and also risky kept aside too long... portable using external SSD or flash-drive now icon_rolleyes.gif

i converted old machines for download and storage. i turn them on only when i want to hehe

i had bad incidents with hdds too. that's why i have full-ssd setup for my laptops since years ago. coupled with regular incremental backups, it's all good so far.

tbh, data backups saved me countless times. it's good to make it a habit.
*
Keeping HDDs offline w/o power not good in my experience notworthy.gif yup all computing on SSD, only NAS still using 4 x HDD on RAID icon_rolleyes.gif

indeed NAS not a full backup or fail-safe method but reduce the risk & time a lot for me in last 4 years and hopefully counting sweat.gif

Even thou I had few brands of SSD that I still avoid till today shakehead.gif due to more than 3 times failure... especially Kingston (personal reason)

nas is fine haha we all have different use cases and practices, so just do what you see fit.

these days, even so-called good brands cannot guarantee anything about their products. hence just get the ones you want, and hope for the best haha (overexaggerating, but that's what i thought)
*
totally agreed notworthy.gif nowadays keep monitoring SSD price as standby for replacement on the NAS since getting into 5th years sweat.gif

hopefully will come good to end year discount icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh no wonder I haven't been able to find any MX500s.. I am using 8 of them in a RAID5 array in my NAS. Have one cold spare. Trying to get some WD Reds now. That and better backup my NAS soon.
