QUOTE(PRSXFENG @ Dec 18 2024, 03:37 PM) I would say Transcend SSD230S It's basically the same guts inside Amongst the Kingston budget SSD which is nearly all dogshit, if you can find at good price, I reco KC600. Also similar TLC + DRAM QUOTE(Boldnut @ Dec 18 2024, 05:15 PM) speaking of budget 1TB SATA SSD. between Adata SU650, Kingston A400, Silicone Power A55, Kioxia Exceria. (got other option?) which one is best? Usage will be mainly for install big file size video games + sometimes download movie. Speed is not important because capped by sata, would prefer reliability & storage /price. If you can afford slightly higher i reco KC600 for the reason above.

Heat problem with early Gen5 SSDs is simply coz from overheating controllers IC as these are basically overclocked Gen4 controllers.
Newer gen controllers designed from scratch for Gen5 speeds are starting to come into market which reduces the heatloads from needing a noisy fan down to just a chunky HS block all without thermal throttling.
(NANDs are basically the same for both gen and thrives in heat)

QUOTE(cenkudu @ Dec 27 2024, 07:22 PM) i'm searching for M2. 2230 Gen 4 x 4 SSD Pcie nvme. Through search in lazada and shopee, there are few options on sale for 1 TB: -Crucial P310 around RM 420 -Transcend MTE310S RM 405 -Silicon Power UD90 RM 306 -PNY CS 2142 RM 385 Which one is the better option? Silicon power sound ok but not so famous brand, this is meant for laptop mostly work purposes (normal word processing software) Curious to know which laptop is that which only limits to 2230... Its a rare uncommon size which only boomed recently thanks to handheld gaming gear

Your mobo only up to Gen3 x4. Primary boot OS drive? If want just ngam, Adata SX8200Pro or Crucial P3 Plus. If want overkill can go for Gen4 x4 SSD with DRAM ie P5 Plus, S70 Blade.

QUOTE(horns @ Apr 17 2025, 12:05 AM) shit happened to some of my transcend mte220s 2tb. they kept showing bad sectors. since data are backed up regularly, nothing was lost. here is the interesting part: after i did a diskpart > clean all to them, error messages that report bad sectors stopped, and there is no more corrupted files. their lifespan is still 100% according to crystal diskinfo. so, if your ssds are working, but keep reporting bad sector errors, it's good to try diskpart > clean all (or secure erase) to see if it can bring them back to normal haha If your being using, no way it can go back to '100%' thats physically not possible. Its likely your SSD really is failing but doing a diskwipe just resets its status but the physical damage is still there. Sooner than later the bad sectors will pop up again or worse starts to corrupt your data and sudden death w/o warning cuz you reseted its error reporting. Imho its time to replace them. (Quite surprised it can fail so soon as advertised it has skyhigh MTBF & TBW, maybe its the controller thats dying or something).

QUOTE(PJng @ Apr 17 2025, 12:19 AM) Actually SSD got 2 percentage, health and available spare, what is available spare? Spare is what it says; spare NAND to replace failing ones. Unformatted free space also works the same to give additional spares.

QUOTE(N9484640 @ May 18 2025, 09:36 AM) looking into getting a 2TB portable SSD that runs on USB. It seems 2TB portable SSD are around RM800-900. Should I consider buying a case and use a M.2 SSD instead? It seems far cheaper What are the pros and cons if any? Thanks in advance hmmmm...I just checked the prices again and seems they are almost comparable....I must have seen some fake M.2 previously I would say portable SSD would be marginally better as the hardware is design to be hardier to handling, external force & shocks, the shell casing would also likely be water & dust resistant/proof vs easy enclosures that lack rubber gasket.

QUOTE(horns @ Jun 6 2025, 01:01 PM) Just a new enterprise format, likely will never see appearance in consumer hardware like many existing server/ent standards (U.2 tried but only a few mobos supports it natively).

QUOTE(horns @ Jun 6 2025, 03:03 PM) there will be pci-e adaptors for this, i believe. i'm using u.2 drives at home. i also have adaptors for e1.s drives. they work fine. There are adaptors for everything, but my point is if the market were more accepting these standards, they would gradually had been more popular, just like M2 became. If U2 were popular with consumers no doubts mobo makers would replace SATA ports with them as the next gen interface.

QUOTE(horns @ Jun 6 2025, 07:27 PM) ok. well, the news is for the purpose of general awareness, especially for those who are interested in this kind of stuff, so that we don't miss anything good when they're in front of us. in general, to look for good stuff, don't just look at consumer markets, which are limited by current standards. as long as you're willing to take risks, there are often good deals that can be used as alternatives in enterprise/dc space. some are ok to be used as-is, e.g., oem 2280 m.2 nvme ssds, while other enterprise/dc-only form factors can also be used with the help of adapters. by the way, most of the times, m.2 form factors are slower than u.2/3/e1.s in enterprise/dc space. we can confirm the differences by checking out product briefs and technical specs at vendors' website. Not that I disagree. Enterprise/business hardware tech will always be the forefront to get newest stuff such as PCIE Gen5 and now Gen6. But general standards is one thing and enterprise specific standards are another thing.

QUOTE(ben3003 @ Aug 7 2025, 08:57 AM) hi guys, im thinking of switching my work backup drive to a portable ssd. Is orico portable drive ok? Dont need too much of a speed. Or any reliable brand? My buffalo hdd service me since 2012 still working until today. Really top brand Much like external HDD it really depends on the storage media inside which only a few big players. For SSD, Orico would have source the drive from 3rd party OEM. WD/Sandisk, Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba/Kioxia are the few that makes their own storage products end to end but even that is no guarantee for reliability (Sandisk ext SSD recently have higher fail rates).

https://www.techpowerup.com/340170/silicon-...-windows-11-bugTheir SM2508 controller based SSDs have proven to be popular for Gen5 buyers and with this bug not hitting them, all versions of SSDs with SM brain will fly off the shelves.
