Hi

I’d like to ask for advice.

This morning my 8+ was at 10% battery life when it suddenly black screened me, overheated and I guess just died down.

At first I thought coz my battery is old since it’s been acting out lately. But then when I plug in my charger it didn’t work. Neither did force restarting (the volume up and down thing)

So I went to an authorised service centre and it says something faulty with my Taptic and Apple Policy says cannot change just Taptic but must do a phone replacement (which I might as well buy a new one tbh since it’s already 2k++)

Is this true? Hope someone could advice me on this Coz I do hope to salvage my phone if possible since it’s still in a good condition apart from this sudden problem (also new phone is expensive lol)

What big bullshit are they talking about? Which service center (Switch, Machines, Mac City) did you went to?

I have replaced tons of iPhone 8+ batteries before and ALL iPhone 8+ CAN replace JUST THE TAPTIC ENGINE ONLY

EDIT: I used to work for an Authorized Apple Service Center, not some third party shop.

The only time that you will need to replace your whole phone is if the following conditions are met:

- Liquid Damage
- Dead phone (charge for 1 hour still can't turn on/ fried motherboard)
- Unauthorized Tampering (Tampered motherboard/ Tampered iPhone casing/ IMEI or Serial Number does not match your phone description)

Tampered iPhone casing, meaning, in Apple's system shows that your phone should be Space Grey but your phone is Gold

I went to the one on Avenue K.

At first I thought it’s my battery or my charging port etc that’s faulty but he said it my Taptic and that Apple policy says cannot change bla bla bla

I’ll try and get a second opinion later or tomorrow.

Does changing Taptic means everything from my phone will be wiped out? Coz from the way he says it it’s as if my mother board is dead or something

Insider tip,

Changing the taptic engine will not wipe your data, what/why the service centers say will wipe your phone data is because of liability issues.

Anything happens to your data then you'll go and screw with the service center personnel which they don't want any part of, that's why they say will wipe, but please backup your data before handing in your phone for repairs

EDIT: taking precautions of your own data should be your own responsibility, not the service centers

My phone is dead even before I can backup anything earlier and I can’t even revive it now. Anyway now I’m just worried that it really is the fried mother board bit as you mentioned. I haven’t tried charging my phone for like an hour to see if it’ll suddenly start or not though lol

Earlier the SC guy inserted a cable with some voltage reader (? Idk what is it specifically haha but it has numbers on it) and he explained that if it’s battery problem, the reader would be able to read it but in my case it can’t (or the other way around) so that’s why he said it’s the Taptic problem?

Does replacing componets such as the screen/ battery/ having the phone serviced at 3rd party counted as unauthorised tampering?

"Screen/ battery/ having the phone serviced at 3rd party" is considered as tampering, depending on the service provider to charge you for stocking fee, meaning to receive your third party components count as stocking

what colored reader did they plugged your phone with? Nevermind this question.

Voltage reader is the black colored reader.

there are 2 readers for phones that all Apple service providers in Malaysia will have,

White colored reader, to check if the serial number matches the serial number burned into the motherboard
Black colored reader, to check if any current can flow through the entire motherboard

No sure what they personnel is telling you, the 2 readers I mentioned cannot detect issues with batteries, battery issues have separate diagnostics.

I wonder how much bullshit he gave you, but the percentage of the Taptic engine causing the whole phone to fail is rare (does happen) but I never encountered it

If you want, you can try at your own risk to buy a battery from third party, open up the phone and swapp the battery yourself, sometimes, old batteries have no more strength left to power the phone hence your phone cannot turn on

P/S: In my experience, if your battery has no more strength left to turn on the phone, plugging in the black color reader will fry the motherboard

It was black colour.

Now I saw your last statement and I’m worried lol 😬😬😬
My phone was already at 10% when it died in the morning so I’m assuming it’s totally drained when I went to the SC in the evening

I see,, does battery bloated( original battery) required a whole device replacement?

I remember that an ASAP said that
