Has anyone ventured into this hobby before? I did a few impressive models few years ago with simple A4 papers but all became trash when I moved to a new house. After that this hobby went on & off few times but never had the time & dedication to it. Anyways I'll post some high class paper models

Anyway, any suggestion on the type of printer, paper and the proper cutting tools?
*

Any decent colour printers will do, because the professional papercraft hobbist use printers that cost over RM5k so that the results on the paper are water resistant, able to withstand from direct sunlight & longlasting. You probably dont want to go that far tongue.gif I usually recommend HP or Epson printers.
For paper, go for the photo gloss paper because it is not too soft or too hard, good print quality & a little water resistant.
Basic tools you need are scissor, razor blade, rulers, toothpicks, white glues (it becomes transparent after it dries) and maybe a round pen/pencil for bending papers.

If you want to design custom paper models & pretty good in computer 3D design, you can use Hexasuper5 & Papekura Designer. I think 3DMax & lightwave files can be imported into those softwares.

[edit]ZOMG POST HIJACK IN PROGRESS! XD -jhcj

Ok, found some tips and guides to papercraft making from 4chan, so I'll post them up here. smile.gif

Equipment
The essentials are paper, scissors and glue - what paper you use really varies from person to person and model to model, although I can tell you now that Staples Multiuse 80gsm is too thin to print solid blocks of colour on without it going soggy.

Scissors: Sharp. Nuff said.

Glue: Personally I really like UHU as it doesn't make the paper soggy, and it goes "tacky" in a few seconds, so I don't have to sit around holding the model while it dries.

Other things that come in useful would be a ruler, craft knife, and some kind of cutting mat.

Ruler: A metal one is realy essential as I've found out, my plastic one is all cut into now. One of those raised ones that protects you from slicing your own fingers off is good.

Craft knife: Thin, pointy, extremely sharp. Helps with any fiddly bits or on models like the Tardis where you have to cut out slots.

Cutting mat: You can work on newspaper or whatever most of the time, but if you're doing stuff with the craft knife you really need a decent cutting matt. Suitably thick and stiff corrugated cardboard can substitute if you don't have one.

Techniques
Cutting stuff out: If you're older than 6, you've probably covered this in school already. You don't even need particularly steady hands to do it well, just make sure you're in a comfortable position, and take your time.

Gluing: Don't use too much or too little, but you'll have to work out what that means yourself of course... Hold stuff in position while the glue starts to set, and then check on it in a minute or two, while you can still make adjustments (assuming you're using UHU here). You can remove excess with the edge of a paper cut-off, or by rubbing it (no really).

Scoring: Super-useful! Basically you want to cut part way through the paper along lines you're going to fold - which makes the folding a lot easier and (provided you scored in the right place) much more accurate. I do it by lining a ruler up with the line I'm scoring and running the blade of some open scissors along it, with a little pressure, but I strongly suggest you practice this a bit before using it.

There, now you can say 4chan helped you to score!

Personally I find things much easier if I score the fold lines before I cut the parts out.

Methodology
A lot of this is probably blindingly obvious, but I'll put it in just in case.

Work area: Make sure it's free of clutter (and other models), you'll want plenty of elbow room. Also make sure that a lot of it is covered in newspaper (or whatever) to save your desk from glue.

Comfort: You're probably going to be here for hours so make sure your position is comfortable - good posture and that. As well as being generally a good idea, this will help reduce shakes if you're a bit unsteady.

Preparation: Make sure you have everything you need before you begin - printouts of all the shapes, materials, instructions.

Relax: Take your time. If you rush you'll mess up, and it won't look as good. If you're calm you'll sweat less as well, and sweaty mitts aren't good to use with paper. Make sure you set aside time as papercraft is addictive, and normally takes a lot longer than you expect - and it's not really something that lends itself to multitasking with IRC, there isn't much waiting around to do.

Know your limits: More advanced papercraft skip more steps in the instructions and assume you've picked up various techniques, so if you dive straight into a 500 piece 1:1 scale rifle from the Aliens movie, it may come out badly or not at all. The best way to improve your skills is by doing of course, so pick something simple and work your way up (I like the tetris shapes as a starter, I think they're cool!).

Lastly: Have fun! (And remember to upload photos of your creations to 4chan, of course).

Hello Guys,

I just joined yesterday and discovered that you guys are also into this hobby. I started mine about 6 years ago and have about 500 models in my collection. I have build about 50 of them only but now my work is weighing me down and don't have time to do them. I was thinking of collecting as much as possible and wait for my retirement to enjoy all this. Don't get me wrong, I am not even 40 yet!!

I have bought from fiddler's green from US http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/ and
peramodels http://www.venus.dti.ne.jp/~kpd/member.html from Japan. I used Kodak coated paper 115gsm and laminate them with clear PVC (it makes them looked like plastics) Printed them with my Lexmark 605, cut them with my trusted satinless steel scissors and X-Acto #11 hobby knife on a cutting mat. I prefer to use the contact adhesive (rubber glue) for sticking them together.

I will try to post my collection in the future as I am still learning how to get my way around this forum (He...He..) huh.gif wink.gif

I think they're superior, though potentially a waste of ink. But what the hell, these cats are cute enough for me to ignore that aspect.

Erm if anyone got talents in 3D modelling u can PM for the software specially made for papercraft modelling, just build a 3D model and it will generate the whole template with side gum borders and folding lines. If not mistaken it also can import 3DSMax files too.

Ok, found some tips and guides to papercraft making from 4chan, so I'll post them up here. I've also added these to the first post of the thread. smile.gif

Fold into a quarter (dont press the folding too hard) into a cone shape, cut the marked part with a scissors and you'll get a nice circle in the middle after opening it back

I'm not sure what you guys call it, different people call different names
laugh.gif Its a circular object like a UFO. You press it on the paper adjust the diameter size you want and turn the blade around to cut and you'll get a perfect cirle or circular shape that you want.

That's why I said you need lots of spare cash to buy that tools, but I think it can't be use with a very small diameter circle thought. blink.gif

to get the files, just go to http://www.i-love-epson.co.jp/ec/event/how...us/download.htm

download the two files for "Windows" from the higher table, which is 53.6MB(template+instructions with picture) and 14.9MB(further instructions with pictures) each

you can just ignore the lower table, it's actually the same two files break into smaller file size

Normally I will use Gum , and those difficult part needed to be paste quickly I use UHU , lastly those parts needed to do with circle I will use double sided tape eg. Tyres . That ferrari not cun la .... Too fake liao ... Hahaha ... Now doing a motorcycle ...

i'll try to make n finish both ultra realistic yamaha bike and aston martin...will put pics when finish....
and oso i'll try to add some custom mod using my creativity....
the idea for aston martin is:
-bumper & side skirt can remove and change wit another custom bumper
-some reinforcement to make the chassis more strong
-both doors can open
-led light perhaps for rear and front light...will think about it
-front hood can open and will put engine on it....
-new bucket seat....
-more realistic roll cage....
-plate number...hhahaha rclxm9.gif
-anyone wan to add...??? smile.gif

Added on July 3, 2008, 8:45 pmcham....
juz an opinion la....
u can cut the wheel n try to make realistic one...
lot of web provide the template...juz resize to ur scale oni....
and u can cut the window n put a transparent plastic....scrap book cover...
then add some gadget for the interior like meter, dashboard, steering and bucket seat....
oso can take from other car template n convert it to fit wit ur car...
hehehe

Can't help it..... the paper is thick but sometime ago...... some guys in the smartgroup forum said to actually colour the sides with matching colour to hide the white but this is too troublesome and I left it as it is...... Yes.... I like the Canon site..... it has a lot of toys and they are quite interesting. I also bought from fiddlersgreen website and I am a lifetime member after I paid close to RM400 for it..... and also Peramodel as well as Raspera. Have you bought any from any sites?

Been wanting to do papercraft for a year, but still couldn't get myself into it.

Need to buy papers, download the templates and use company's laser printer to do the printing (while nobody's around)...

Then I don't know how long it would take for me to cut & assemble them.

Wah, safe to say this is an old thread. Well I'm here to bump it brows.gif

I started papercrafting a month ago, and just recently I finished a model.

Metal Gear Rex (V2) from Metal Gear Solid : The Twin Snakes.

user posted image

Yeap that bipedal gheyness is a V2.

This is the original Rex from original template (comparison with my V2 Rex in terms of size) :

user posted image

**both are printed at 140 gsm A3 size papers.

Apa ada dengan V2?

Well I customized the original unfolded parts (from original template), color-corrected them, rearranged the parts; using photoshop.

-Original template is 6 pages
-My template is 12 pages

I referred to this picture as for the brand new eyes for V2;

user posted image

Here some more pictures of my V2;

user posted image

Notice that I use a tootpick to support Rex's railgun. Its heavy like frick! (I use 140gsm papers)

user posted image

I'll be doing a lot more template customization after this. Next model is Exteel Sidewinder/Doom 3 Cyberdemon.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I resized the original template lol.

Hhhmmm looks like a very good idea. Selling..... If you make it from 'the ground up', then you could sell it. Most free sites that i visited saying that it is for personal usage only. Not for selling, unless if u are willing to give some 'royalty' to the design owner. Needs consensus from relevant parties if u did not design it yourself...

I finished making a 2 foot long "Chinook" double rotor helicopter. Now in a 70% completion making a 4 foot long USS Saratoga Aircraft Carrier. Dunno how to post pictures yet but will do so when i know how...

Actually this is a very good practice. After that it's only building and learning. Can't really skip the process.

I skipped the block craft and went straight to a Charmander on PaperPoke site. It looked really ruined, but I learnt a lot from the process. tongue.gif
