i think if you want to tighten the bass, its more worth while to get a good amp than to do the mods and increasing the dampening.
*
^

this. in fact, mods may yield negative outcomes, and may be irreversible

dampening in general, only potentially increases bass volume, or worse muffles the bass

you're welcome. i'd advise you to max out your chain of DAC and amp first before doing mods on your headphone. better returns that way.

otherwise even if you get a 1st class mod done on your headphones, you are still getting a 3rd class signal out from your DAC and amp.
*
this, and if you dont like your dac/amp, or want to change it, at least can sell back anyways as opposed to trying to sell a modded headphone.

do also note, modding a headphone may also have different pairing/combo/"compatibility" with your dac and/or amp. what worked previously may not work after mod. so thats another downside smile.gif

IMO you shouldn't worry too much about 'how it's going to sound', especially when you just bought a new pair of headphones. Just enjoy it as it is now and make side/big upgrades when you feel you need to otherwise you'll have big expectations and most of the time you will be disappointed (as in my case) and wasted a lot of money in a very small time frame on amps.

But hey, if you have the extra money why not spend it? I sure do wish I could.
*
yes if AFTER you got the headphone. you should be worrying about it BEFORE you buy the headphone.

with shops like jaben around, if you happen to bought the "wrong headphone" of have decision-regrets, then you have no one to blame cept yourself

thats why we have jaben to test those things first. im quite satisfied with the sound but driving it through a laptop doesnt do justice for it even though the cans are 80hm. it needs a little bit more power to make it sing nicely
*
why didnt you test with an amp while making purchase? you know eventually it'll come down to that. and with amps into the picture, while you may like the headphone without amp, after amp there may be other headphones that would fancy you more with the few amps you have in mind.

eg: famed sennheisers who are said to scale much better than other brands with good amps/source

I was referring to amps, and maybe DAC to some extend.

And not everyone have the time and luxury to go to Jaben and try out their stuff.
*
switch my keyword headphone to amps then.
and yes, if you dont have the time/luxury to test it out, your problem then.

ps: jaben doesnt have to be the only place/chance to try out setups, thats what the communities/TTs are for
and yes, i've went to a TON of headfi/car ICE TTs

as i am also expressing mine, take it however you will smile.gif

ps: "your" can mean whoever that has issues with testing at jaben/TT etc
no need to take it personally.

retail price for the Magnum was SGD 438. so i think it was kind of a steal. the headphones alone cost SGD 489.
*
govibe is basically jaben's in house brand, and jaben got good margin with beyers because of high sales volume. yes, i am well aware of their individual RSP, as i went there to buy my headphone + amp too early march this year smile.gif

true, like the hippo products are all their hse brands. The magnum partners well with the the dt880 with the gain switch to High, lovely dac but in malaysia its 1k. hadoi
*
never heard of the magnum, being a dac/amp combo, its kinda on the down side for my preference. that said, govibe for the most part pairs very well with beyers in bringing out the highs/lows (like govibe peak), it was also amongst the headphone that was in heavy consideration (DT880) when i was auditioning for my first headphone purchase smile.gif

Added on December 12, 2011, 6:51 pmI cannot believe ppl say DT880 doesnt hv enough bass =='''
*
i cant believe them too. DT880 (or general beyers) emphasize on high/lows. if they claim lack of mids then yeah, otherwise it seems BS to me tongue.gif

both hv its advantages~ hd580 is more accurate and u can like feel the guiter player 'flip' the strings and the sound moves nicely~ dt880 hv more bass and wider soundstage~

my hd580 sound clearer but dt880 is more neutral~ as my hd58- without amping was like no bass at all lolz~

cannot make the final comment yet as the dt880 is not fully burn in but the hd580 burned in for more than 200hours
*
i personally believe your sound stage is more of an illusion from beyer's highs emphasis, especially from your line: "can feel the water/wave come from very far and the birds 'sound' like higher" as those are generally playing on the high frequencies. no doubt instrument/sound separation would be clearer with greater clarity

why i say that? senns are generally unmatched for their wide sound stage, and being an open can vs semi-open, i do not believe that an open can would ever have narrower sound stage than semi's (likewise, closed cans)

Haha the moment i heard the DT880 Pro i said i must buy this! and also the govibe magnum is just perfect. DT880 is more for a person who listens to all types of music, hence the neutral sound. but i think the bass is awesome if u have a good amp
*
i would beg to differ that the mids are just not good enough for vocals, even more specifically female vocals. that said, you CAN change that but you will have to sacrifice that wonderful bass (tubes lol)

and on a similar subject, my AT AD900 cant do the same either, its more so the pairing between AD900 and govibe peak, which brings it as close as i can on the capability to play all kinds of music (headphones and LFE/extreme low frequencies are just a lost cause, and for a good reason anyways, so it is rather understandable)

that said, govibes (magnum, peak etc) pairs extremely well with beyers especially in driving its bass/low ends smile.gif

IINM people also mentioned that the govibes were made with beyers in mind too, forgotten who mentioned that to me during TT's/auditions etc.

As well as Tiny tube too IMO due to strong input from beyers. So magnum is for beyers? Plan to get DT880/250 next month but personally doing research on portable amp which I can pair with 240 MKII too. For desktop I already owned D1 and A1 with upgraded tubes.
*
not sure how well the magnum goes for dt880/T1, i can only vouch for the peak, though that is a desktop amp, while you're looking for portable.

i feel senheiser more accurate, the 880 makes your song voice sounds strange!
i recognize the singer by the song instead of voice usign 880 =
*
on the contrary, 880 would be more accurate, as the mids are more neutral (thats where most vocal ranges are focused on)

that said, it definitely doesnt sound as good as the senns, and that imo is coloration smile.gif

I thought Magnum is portable? If desktop why should rely on SS? sorry I like Tube sound. No offense.
*
maybe you misunderstood, i've never heard of the magnum myself, thus i cannot comment on it. Also, a huge majority of govibe amps are SS, and AFAIK, the magnum. so if you're into tubes, you might wanna look elsewhere

most probably someone from Jaben SG, altho the guy who tuned the govibes definitely likes his bass and nothing much else.
different people judge accuracy and neutrality differently. what is accurate bass to me might be bass light to some and even too bassy to others.
*
i am quite sure its someone from msia as i didnt really chat much to anyone at jaben sg other than my friend (whos msian) it could be very well be him too
