Hello all.

I am a MBP user since early 2014.

My MBP is the late 2013 model and I am still using it now in fact.

Just that it has been a bit dated, the performance of the mac is not as good as before (of course, it has been serving me for a good 7 years + now already), and that the battery life has worsen.

So I am thinking to get a replacement unit.

question is, should i go with the MBA or the MBP?

Honestly, i feel my MBP has been quite under-utilised over the past few years. I have been doing very little amount of work like photoshop, lightroom, vid editing, etc. my mac is mainly only an entertainment MacBook, which I've been using it to surf the net, youtube, WhatsApp, netflix, etc mostly. (very seldom do gaming on my mac)

I also have a company laptop for my work, mainly on word doc, excel and PPT, etc. so i don't really work on my mac.

I guess the answer is quite clear no need to go for the MBP if i'm going to continue with only these light usage right? what do you think?

Further question is that, if i decide to for go the MBA, does the 7 or 8 cores GPU really matter? for the base model it is RM4399 vs RM5399 for the extra core plus another 256gb of SSD storage. Do you think it is worth the upgrade?

My current MBP is 256gb ssd only. which is just ngam ngam for my use. Won't mind paying a little extra which can benefit me for the next many years to come, right?

My current MBP could still do the job at least for now, guess I will be getting it once it gives up on me. I hope my next mac could last me many years as well.

Thanks for reading my long post.

Just get this M1 MBA would be sufficient for your usage. Easily overkilled for these usages.
Get the 8cores GPU if budget allowed, rather than regret later.

If not urgent, wait for year end new model, second generation ARM processor.
*
thanks man, will definitely wait for the year end model. now my mac still can do the job, just itchy only.
timing wise also just ngam, when bonus is out. hahaha

rumour has it that the new m2 chipset MacBook air gonna be premiered by next year. let's say they launch in Q1, likely gonna reach our shore like in Q2, which is about 10-12 months from now.

I'm not sure if my late 2013 MBP could last until next year as it is dying soon.

If I decide to go with the current M1 MBA and I won't mind topping up RM800.

Would you upgrade the ram or just go topup another RM200 to get the 8th core GPU and 512gb of storage?

Edit: Plus right now Standard Chartered credit card can allow doing instalment of up to 36 months interest free (knowing your MacBook could last easily 5 years), not bad to go with interest free instalment right.

Another good thing is also, they are giving a complementary 2 years of warranty (i'm not sure if it's like the Apple Care Plan), anyone has any idea on this?

This promotion ends 31 Dec 2021. still got some time to think about it.

Thanks a bunch

I suggest to wait until September when they should release the new MBPs, might have an announcement on MBAs. I totally understand your situation, I have a 2016 base model MBP 13" and its slow as hell, impacting my work. Been waiting since the beginning of the year for the next MBPs and nearly bought the current M1 MBP but decided to be patient.

As for upgrading to 512gb, depends on what you use for I guess, do you need that extra storage? I will personally just upgrade the RAM as I think most people won't even reach close to the full potential of the M1 chips, and that extra 200 maybe spend on accessories.

If can wait, then just wait till Sept/Oct for the announcement.. for me I decided to upgrade my MBP late 2011 as I feel it is  time to upgrade  biggrin.gif and my first time using MBA instead of MBP.. because this current MBA feels exactly like MBP minus the fan..
*
thanks guys, definitely will wait for it. just in case if the new one is launched by then. because the moment i buy this, i'm gonna use it for the next 6-7 years already, so just wanna be sure to get the latest possible.

For me, I think I would most likely get the 512gb ones, because i don't normally use external storage (unless I have to), plus i don't have too much of photo and video editing to do, so if possible, might just keep them in the mac. don't wanna bring additional stuff around if I could.
Yes, for me, i don't think I will need 16gb of ram too because most of the youtuber also says 8gb is very sufficient for ordinary user like me, which I can still do editing with ease at 8gb. I mean for me, i would probably be spending the 1k to double the storage and for that extra GPU, imagine if I amortise the 1k into 6 years, each year is only RM167. I don't see a reason why I should not.

as for the other accessories, will need to see what I need before I buy though.

I choose 256GB, save the money for icloud. So no need to go higher storage tbh. If you already subscribe iCloud for your iPhone, then you can utilise it in your MBA.
*
i see.... good to hear that.

But too bad I don't use iPhone though....... hmm, maybe that's why.....

I suggest you go with a min of 512GB. MacOS alone already consume alot of space, if I remember correctly its around 20GB +-, so 256GB is really a struggle.

RAM is subjective, depends on usage. Just go with your budget, wont go wrong.
*
thank you bro. ya, i will likely be going with the 512gb model. as for the ram, will see how it goes. it's not that could not throw in another 800 for the ram but the question is also whether would i really need it.

but understand that new MBA is not upgradable later on.

Well.. i'd go for the 16gb ram because occasionally i do design rendering's, photoshops etc. My concern was only the not upgrable ram. Storage can alwiz op for icloud or external ssd.  smile.gif
*
it depends on one's needs i guess. for me i don't really do rendering, etc. very very minimal of those, 8gb would be more than enough for me, easily for the next 5 years.

running normal apps simultaneously can eat more than 8GB.

This is me running spotify and chrome with multi tabs.....

QUOTE(firdausbhari @ Aug 13 2021, 03:11 PM)
16GB would be better

for any videos editing, yeah 8GB is enough but its just bare minimum requirement.

8GB is enough if only run 1 app at 1 time. if running multiple apps, might wanna consider getting more RAM.

Me, I placed order on Sunday night, but until now the status still show processing.
*
I see, please keep us updated. i'm also seriously considering placing one given that my current late 2013 MBP giving way very soon.

I'm more incline to go with the 512gb model only. so it's not a custom made one, should be faster.

well, do you actually read their tag line from the website? I dun think the parents, silbings, auntie/uncle, cousins, nephew, & homeschool teachers will have education email lah. I wondering how many people really read the detail and understand from the original source: https://www.apple.com/my-k12/store

it is for all grades:
- primary school
- secondary school
- tertiary education
- postgrades
- other educations

how many students above will have school emails???????

the only * is = * Quantity limits apply. Visit Sales & Refund Policy for full terms and conditions.

Tired of these kind of questions in this forum. Just read it and just buy lah. The more you read, the more you will understand about Apple products. A lot of fantastic feature and many more things can be discuss.

Sorry for the late reply. So i sent the macbook at a certain aasp in putrajaya and was quoted 1899 to repair. The mba has applecare till 2024. Even states in apple website that it should cover 2 incidences of accidental damage to the screen (for a small sum). But the aasp says warranty voided due to physical damage and i have to pay. So maybe malaysia doesnt cover for the 2 incidences i guess. I feel like whats the point in taking for 3 year apple care if i still have to pay about half the price of a full new mba for this. I mean what kinda damage is not physical in nature. Whats worse is even if i repair the screen it can happen again, then what, have to pay another 1899 again? Whats the point. Prob gonna email or call apple directly and confirm about applecare. Feel cheated

did it just cracked for no apparent reason?
it may be worrying for the m1 MBA owner tho.

Me.

If you didn't bundle the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) during the purchase, you only can call the Apple Support to add the APP to your device.

They will add the APP to your device, then you will receive an email from Apple, you click the "Pay Securely" link inside the email and make payment (RM799.00), wait 1-2 days, you will see your coverage extended here.

I see, okay thanks mate.

In that case, I will have to call them to do so for me already.

Hi guys, normally for your MBA M1, how much of battery would it consume assuming you fully charged it at night say 10pm and put it to sleep until next morning? typically, battery drop of a couple of %?

Meanwhile, i replaced my battery, but the laptop just wouldn't be shut down completely, after I shut it down, it would auto turn on (you can hear the boot up sound). and then it will start consuming battery, can consume like 30% battery (with lid closed) in just a few hours.

something not normal? anyone can share your experience?

I just got my MBA M1 a couple of day now. I had never use the shutdown button yet, just close the lid. So far I never experience the battery drop the next morning when I open the lid. If it is 88%, the next day I open it still show 88%.

Alright, thanks for sharing. I will bring it back to the service centre.
