Guys, any problems encountered when using M1 MBA so far?

I’ve been reading on macrumours & reddit forums and some users reported to have few problems such as wifi/bluetooth stability, artifact on the screen and sudden laggyness & shutoff.

I may have to hold this purchase and wait for 2nd iteration.

I wish to buy MBA 16GB 1TB SSD for my wife.

She is a lecturer & a researcher.
Mostly using microsoft office 365 for works & teaching.

Then she will use certain research simulation softwares to do her research which is available only on windows. Is Windows Parallel stable & can run smoothly on Apple M1 ARM chip?

Do you think these max out spec is wayy overkill? Or i should i just go with 8GB RAM only? She likes to dump all here work in one place hence the 1TB SSD.

Appreciate your input guys. Thanks!

That's what I did. I can't take the waiting game risk because my travel date is fixed already.
So, I just pulled the trigger yesterday.
I go with the base model MBA.
I got it from Switch.
For those who need zero% installment plan, they got you covered. But it is based on your max credit limit. I also use my maybank treats point.

Now let's begin the adapter hunting.
*
0% installment means the bank will still DEDUCT the total price initially right?
But they will charge it monthly?

Example: MBA M1 base model RM4,500.
I take 12 month installment: monthly is just RM375

But in my credit card info, the bank actually already deduct that RM4,500 but it won’t show up in your statement.
Rather, you see your cc balance is already reduced from your overall limit (eg. Limit RM10,000, minus RM4,500 becomes RM5,500).

My theory is correct ya? hmm.gif

I just pulled the trigger and bought MBA M1 16GB 1TB SSD via education pricing few minutes ago via Apple Malaysia website.
Took the Apple care protection too.
ETA around 24 feb to 3 march.

Bought it for my wife since her MBA 2014 4GB 256GB showing its ages already.

Planning to grab her old MBA & compliment it with my ipad pro 2018 11” LTE. laugh.gif

Btw, i am also planning to buy Ugreen USB C hub with the dual USB C inputs at Shopee.

You guys got any problems using it so far?
How about the infamous Wifi interference when using the hub? Still happens?
Hub gets hot after a while?

Appreciate your feedback guys. notworthy.gif

My advice is not to use that sort of hub unless the laptop is constantly sitting on a desk. The hub itself takes 2 USB C ports and I would recommend the hubs that use just a single USB C port. I have 3 different hubs and I find the one which just uses a single USB C port the most useful. Initially I gotten the same with the dual USB C inputs, then when I purchased a new monitor which had a USB C connection, I found that with that hub, there is only 1 power delivery USB C and I can't connect the monitor to it.
*
My wife will be constantly using it on a small study desk.
Having a 1 usb c hub means she will have to deal with the long usb cable dangling out which is not quite practical as the desk is just small enough to put her MBA on.

QUOTE(Ashroft98 @ Feb 2 2021, 11:29 AM)
Also the 2 port usb hub sometimes tend to become slanted over time. Slanted like heavy gpu in pc  doh.gif
*
Slanted due to attaching many devices via the hub overtime ya?

QUOTE(rickyro @ Feb 2 2021, 02:04 PM)
If you were to get a PD hub, never ever charge ur macbook thru the PD port
*
Why? The charge won’t even get thru or will just charge at much slower rate than normal?

There are some postings on reddit... saying any PD items that charges ur macbok will cause ur macbook to brick, this also includes LG's USB C PD Monitors...

i'll get a USB C hub, but the USB C port shall only be limited to peripheral stuffs... charging will still be using original charger + independent USB-C port
*
Like this i might as well get the official apple USB C AV multi adapter just to be on the safe side.
Or charging thru the official adapter will have similar problem? sweat.gif

Any good non-PD USB C hub you can recommend?

QUOTE(Ashroft98 @ Feb 2 2021, 03:47 PM)
Slanted due to thick cables like RJ45 or HDMI connected to the hub. The cables' thick/heavy head causes the usb hub's 2 male ports to bear full weight of it. But other peripherals like usb etc are mostly ok and wouldn't cause any problem.

Thanks for your input

Charging thru official multi adaptor will have such problem too.. But i don't think that rm349 dongle supports PD
*
How about this one? You recommend this?
RM158 via shopee vs RM349 official Apple multi AV adapter USBC laugh.gif

DLink USB C hub without PD

user posted image

I’ve read thru several reddits on USBC hubs bricked out MBA & MBP M1 when users powers their machine thru the hub.

Yes, better to stay away from USB C hubs with PD for now, especially if you are charging power thru it.
Maybe in the macOS update, apple will iron this issue out?

I’m ordering the Dlink DUB-M530 5-in-1 USB-C Hub with HDMI and SD/microSD Card Reader. RM158 via shopee.

I’m not taking chance on using USB C port on any non-PD USBC hub itself. sweat.gif

Just received my wife’s new MBA M1 16GB/1TB today.

Ordered on 1st feb via Apple MY website & using education pricing. Expected to receive on 19th, but it arrived today (17th).

My wife jumped with joy.

She happy to get her new MBA M1 while her old MBA 2014 4GB/256GB will complement my ipad pro 2018 11” LTE nicely after this drool.gif

I've tracked my SSD writes over a couple of days with varying time - and it averages about 20GB/day for my workload, which is within expectation.

My guess is people with high writes are really pushing their machines. Who knows.
*
what app you are using to monitor SSD read & write status?

under which condition if the SSD life is nearing EOL that we should be aware off?

i think i can omit the "SSD swap" gate happening in M1 macs.

i've checked my wife's new MBA M1 16GB 1TB SSD, so far no issue via DriveDX app.

or this is just a scare for potential M1 macs buyers? whistling.gif

Anyone so far?  sad.gif

From what i read from the article, this happens when users plugged in the USBC with Power Delivery multi ports adapter.

From my extensive researches, i avoided to buy PD enabled USBC multi ports adapter and bought the NON PD ones, such as the Dlink DUB-M530 5-in-1 USBC with HDMI, SD card & 2 USB A ports.

My wife’s MBA M1 been using it for 7 months now, so far no crashes yet *touchwood* icon_rolleyes.gif

Is it safe to buy & use third party power adapters such as Ugreen 30W adapter for MBA M1? Any issues? Or i should buy the original charger?

So far so good...

So third party cables USBC to USBC are not advised ya?

This is for travel purpose.

The original apple cable & adapter is for home usage.
