PETALING JAYA: Between January 2018 and last month, 1,377,862 prepaid lines were registered without valid information, according to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said it has terminated 920,217 of those lines and updated the other 457,645 with valid info to prevent the numbers from being used for fraud.

"From the aspect of industrial regulation, MCMC conducts the process of data verification audit with the National Registration Department (JPN) to verify the integrity of our prepaid user line database, making sure that all active lines are validated accordingly," he said in response to Kimanis MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin on the ministry’s initiative to protect the people from scams.

Saifuddin said a Cyber Crime Committee has been established by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to allow both parties to work together strategically to combat cybercrime.

Also, CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) is promoting online safety through awareness programmes, and sharing its technical expertise with enforcement authorities such as PDRM and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).

Saifuddin also explained to Mohamad Alamin that the investigation of online and offline scams falls under the jurisdiction of PDRM, KPDNHEP, Securities Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia and other related agencies depending on the type of fraud.

In a previous statement, MCMC announced it has issued 15 compounds totalling RM700,000 on Oct 1 to telcos that registered prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information last year.

PDRM has also launched a Semak Mule mobile app for the public to check if any of their phone numbers or bank accounts have been used to commit fraud.
