Martial, we waiting for his world class status for 5 years now. Ole still need to sapu his hair and pat him on the shoulder, put powder on his butt to hope he does his thing. But many a times, you get the one who dont want to run, can't hold the ball, shoot only when its worldie time.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one seeing this...VDB and Fred kept us ticking at the right pace and right amount of safety. They should start. No more Mata / Matic please......just too slow. Rashford to the left, Greenwood to the right. Cavani in the middle. I'll take a gamble.
*
Yeah, VDB - Fred felt about right.
Our engine felt...reliable. That was the word for me. No fuss in transitioning defence to attack, and Fernandes could drift knowing he had those 2 covering.

Rashie looks pretty okay on the right. Could have Martial left with Rashie on the right with Cavani through the middle too.
Matic and Mata together is really too slow. Mata means opponent's leftback is going to have a field day down that flank as he cannot track the speed.

Next match against Southampton i don't think VDB will be start, most likely 4-3-3 with Fred/McSauce/Bruno combination.

I'm worry VDB unable to cope with Southampton player  sweat.gif

Are you referring to VDB's fitness, or the potential physicality of the opposition?

If it is the latter, I am of the opinion he is well up for the PL.
He's played up to the semis of the CL as a key component of the Ajax team and is a full Dutch international. Dutch players tend to do well in this league.

Finally we will know what is written in shaw's contract that ensures he is injured every season.
Finally we may know if ole has a clause that prevents him from getting fired?
Finally we will know of Woodward really tell dortmund that whatever the price they want for Sancho, we will pay 1 pound less and claim they want 20million pound more?
*
Perhaps we will see a clause that Woodward gets to set the starting lineup each match and the manager just needs to manage the performance.
Then we'd all be like..."Oh, that explains the past 7 years!".

Jota is just 1 example in the Wolves team that is damn good and we are not even paying any attention to them. This dude could've solved our flank problems with ease and much to $ to spare.
*
Our transfer strategy was Sancho or nothing.
And leaving it as late as possible hoping that Dortmund would cave.

Honestly, we're not playing bad.
Just chances not taken and Southampton taking theirs.

Thoughts.

My stance is the same as when we were 2 goals down. We were playing well, just that we didn't convert while Southampton did.
Greenwood and Rashford had their chances. Then Cavani came on. See what we can do with a proper finisher.

My shout out to VDB. He was so good at connecting that midfield and ensuring Fernandes has a base to create on.
Imagine if Pogba had played in place of VDB. I don't think we'd have came out with the points.

Fred-VDB looks to be a good engine room pairing. Gives Bruno the platform to play off. Matic looks composed when he doesn't need to do the running and can use his experience to position. I think our midfield diamond may be here to stay.

Surprisingly, our area of concern now goes to our attack. A lof of us were thinking Rashie and Greenwood were potent finishers, seeing Cavani as a proper number 9 putting away chances just highlights how far they have to go. When Telles plays, Cavani should play as well. One has the crossing, the other provides the headers.

highlight doesnt reflect the game, if you watch the full game. 1st half actually not shit at all, it's 50-50 balance. it's just a difference of kayuhijau unable convert chance. soton set piece, 2 chance 2 goals whereas all our shots block by keeper or maybe we tembak to keeper.
*
Very true.
I thought we were ok first half. SOT literally scored with their only chances.

Playing diamond like last night we need a proper DLP to sit infront of the back 4. Our back 4 isn't as fast as some would think. If we could find someone like Carrick and we will be sorted. Fred and VDB can press all they want and Bruno to make plays from up top. DLP-Carrick like will shield and play long balls to release either LF or RF.

Great win last night and it seems like our away matches are our home matches. We really need to improve the home form.
*
Matic did fine in that role last night as he didn't need to bust a lung with any runs, with Fred and VDB doing the covering.
It is notable that SOT's goals did not come from open play, but set pieces.

The weakness is the direction of the attack, which is almost always left focused. We are really too dependent on AWB providing the width on the right, exposing the fact we don't have a natural RF.

oh damn next match PSG, so cavani would start? brows.gif

Considering his age and fixture congestion, need to manage his minutes.
I'd prefer to start one of our younger attackers to run the defence down and use Cavani as an impact sub.

Without Bruno, United loses.
He is the single factor that is keeping Ole in his job. Ole should be washing Bruno's car every week.

Let's start a petition that we are willing to play the entire 2nd half of the season away.

Bruno is a clear ones.. We missed him. Good he choose VDB. Still not sure what vdb best role and position. He is everywhere but nowhere.. Maybe it down to his understanding to others and other to him for now

*
VDB is a box to box midfielder. Unfortunately, Ole doesn't seem to understand him.
Best role I have seen for him this season has been when he is paired with Fred and they kept that midfield engine going. The connection from defence to attack was a lot better, and Bruno benefitted off that.

I thought vdb did quite well at bruno position. But sub him out all change. So far, he seems better pair with fred.

Anyone know why fred not in bench?
*
I think the sub was more about getting Bruno on, and we all know which midfielder Ole will sacrifice first.
VDB should be good in a midfield base behind Bruno, so Bruno get's the suuply he needs to create chances.

As far as Fred goes, perhaps Ole giving him a rest.
Him doing all that running every match will start to take it's toll as the season wears on.

Just think of it, not too long ago our midfield 3 was a young McTominay-Perreira-Lingard.
