The Kingdom Under Fire (KUF) series moves in a different direction in Circle of Doom. Instead of being a real-time strategy game like its predecessors, Circle of Doom will be an all-out role-playing game set in the KUF universe. The story picks up from where the previous game (Heroes) left off, tracking six characters as they embark on their own adventures. Later, their destinies cross, and they must travel across dimensions and purge the evil from the Epoch of Light.
Players start by selecting a character and playing through his or her backstory. Celine, an elven warrior, works to restore the spirit of Curian. Incidentally, there's also a playable character named Curian. Kendal battles against a mutation taking control of his body, while Regnier tries to find his way after losing his immortality. Two final characters remain locked away until players finish the other campaigns. The overarching storyline branches off in different directions according to the decisions the player makes.
At its core, Circle of Doom employs a traditional hack'n-slash style, where players plow through hordes of monsters and allocate points to different attributes. Each character can carry up to five or six weapons, wielded by either arm, and enhanced by a selection of more than fifty abilities and sixty spells. Hit Points are self explanatory, lengthening the amount of damage a character can take before he drops. Luck determines the quality of items defeated foes will drop. However, it's the use of Skill Points that truly defines the game. Every attack move, like swinging a sword, has a specific skill point cost attached. So, characters with a higher capacity for these points will be able to pull off more complex chains of moves before stopping to rest.
This system allows for easy customization of characters, making it possible to specialize in certain areas. Tankers can pump up their Hit Points and equip themselves with the toughest armor until they become nearly unstoppable. Another player can then specialize in using performing attacks - here's where things get a little strange. A masochism skill can be associated with certain weapons, replenishing skill points whenever the character takes damage. Players can purposefully injure themselves to get a skill point boost and get back into the fight. An Insurance skill will also be available to players, where their characters earn a small amount of money each time they receive damage.
Circle of Doom supports up to four people playing cooperatively across randomly generated dungeons with hundreds of monsters ready to tear them apart. Players can bring their single player characters into multiplayer, or create one on the spot to better suit the party. In addition, they can trade custom-crafted weapons, created by combining different weapons from the inventory. As expected, defeated monsters drop rarer and more powerful items in multiplayer, adding an extra incentive for teaming up.
Graphics feature fantasy characters dressed in medieval armor. Circle of Fire also features fully destructible environments, which actually serves a purpose outside of adding eye-candy - the game actually rewards people for going on destructive rampages.
On the surface, Circle of Doom lacks depth, but we'll see if the simple approach wins out in the end. If nothing else, it will bring a unique twist to role-playing games while being a divergent addition to the KUF series.
