LONDON: Legendary British actor Sean Connery, best known for playing fictional spy James Bond in seven films, has died aged 90, his family told the BBC on Saturday.

The Scottish actor, who was knighted in 2000, won numerous awards during his decades-spanning career, including an Oscar, three Golden Globes and two Bafta awards.

Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90. He was the first actor to play James Bond on the big screen in Dr. No in 1962, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever followed.

Connery as superspy James Bond.

Tributes immediately began pouring in for Connery who was considered one of the greatest movie stars of his generation.

“How infinitely sad to hear the news Sir Sean Connery has passed away,” stated a message on the Twitter account maintained for fellow Bond actor Roger Moore who died in 2017.

“He and Roger were friends for many decades and Roger always maintained Sean was the best ever James Bond. RIP.”

Connery claimed his Oscar in 1988 for best supporting actor for his role as an Irish cop in “The Untouchables”.

He also starred in “The Hunt for Red October”, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “The Rock”.

But it is his smooth, Scottish-accented portrayal of the suave spy 007 that he will be best remembered for.

The first actor to utter the unforgettable “Bond, James Bond”, Connery made seven official films as novelist Ian Fleming’s creation, giving it what many still consider as the definitive portrayal.

The actor is best known for his portrayal of the suave spy James Bond in movies such as Dr No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger. He acted in seven Bond titles, the last being Never Say Never Again in 1983.

In an interview in 1983, Connery summed up the ideal Bond film as having "marvellous locations, interesting ambiance, good stories, interesting characters – like a detective story with espionage and exotic settings and nice birds."

After he left the franchise, Connery – who was afraid of being typecast – made a name for himself in movies such as Indiana Jones, The Hunt For Red October and The Rock.

He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.

Born in Edinburgh in 1930, Connery dropped out of school at 13 and worked various jobs including a coffin polisher, milkman and lifeguard before moving into showbiz.

"I grew up with no notion of a career, much less acting. I certainly never have plotted it out. It was all happenstance, really," he said in an earlier interview.

In 1989, at the age of 59, he was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive.

Connery is survived by his second wife, Micheline Roquebrune, whom he married in 1975; his son by first wife Diane Cilento, actor Jason Connery; and a grandson from Jason's marriage to actress Mia Sara.

Apparently he had dementia the last few years. Growing old can be a terrible thing. RIP Sean Connery

Interesting you know this. This is one of Alfred Hitchcock and Sean Connery's least known work.

Supposedly, Sean pulled alot of strings to be the lead for this movie.

One gets a feeling that Hitchcock got strong armed into using Sean for this movie and the script is actually very unflattering to Sean Connery's role. I do not think it was a conscious decision of Alfred's part. And Sean was probably drawn to the darkness of the character. He probably wanted something different from his James Bond role.

Some people argue that Marnie was when Alfred Hitchcock started to fall from grace, after a string of very very successful movies...

The next movie he made, with Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, Torn Curtains, he swore he would never work with Hollywood A-Listers actor anymore, and he never did...

They sure do not make movies like they use to.

I recently re-watched Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and Birds in 4k.

I would have to say, out of the 4, Rear Window is my favorite.

What about you?

Favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie?

As for Sean Connery, it would be a very difficult choice between The Untouchables (1987), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and The Hunt for Red October (1990).

I really cannot make a definite choice between those three...

Stay Safe Everyone

When I heard the sad news, went to YT and starts to rewatch his old interviews on Carson etc.

Then accidentally saw comments about 'Marnie'

Watched it.

I admit it's a bit boring on the romance part.

Already downloaded these:

Will watch them later.

'Rear Window'; just by reading the plot already looked interesting.

These old movies are such classic vintage.

I like Paul Newman.

Steve McQueen (never saw him in any Hitchcock movies though)

Golden age.

All of them...especially the actresses looked so beautiful.

Sparkling eyes.

Glorious hair.

Natural beauties.

Compared to now sweat.gif

Believe it or not, I have not watch 'The Hunt for Red October (1990)' laugh.gif

'The Rock'...yeah.

I don't think Steve McQueen was in any of Hitchcock's movies

One of the reason I love Rear Window so much is because Grace Kelly is absolutely GORGEOUS in it. You know the old moniker, they don't make them like they use to. God broke the mold after he made Grace Kelly...

Rear Window was remade into Shia LeBouf (I am no longer famous) Disturbia. With Alfred Hitchcock subtle and masterful direction, I found Rear Window more... suspenseful

Oh...Grace Kelly wub.gif

Whenever someone mentioned the most beautiful women in the world...her name always comes to mind.

Full of grace.

What a perfect face.

Hitchcock offered her to play Marnie.

She was eager, but public outcry in Monaco against her involvement.

Since Marnie is a kleptomaniac.
