Plaster ceiling should not be too expensive to modify, you can negotiate with your renovation contractor. If you make enough noise, developer may do it for you, but is it worth the effort.

May also consider wall fan, stand fan, or ceiling fan that has short span from ceiling.

10ft ceiling height should be minimum. My condo has 11ft ceiling and no strange beam.
