Hello all,

I purchased a condo (the developer shall not be named tongue.gif). We still haven't VP. The developer was nice enough to include two air-cond units for the living area and master bedroom. Unfortunately, this means they did not provide a ceiling fan hook or even a electrical point & switch for these two rooms. bangwall.gif Dining, Bedroom 2 & 3 all have fan hooks and points. They also included box lights for the living room.

I think we are still living in a tropical country where the weather is not hot all the time, ceiling fans are sufficient to cool me down, so I was wondering of ways to have a fan in the living area and master bedroom. I thought of a few ways of doing this,

1) hacking the wall, the box plaster ceiling and the concrete ceiling to lay down wiring just for the fan. This is obviously messy, need to get approval, I will have to repaint, I have the laminated flooring to think about, fuse concerns, buying new switches etc.

2) to avoid hacking the concrete ceiling, I could just make a layer of plaster ceiling and hide the cabling under there, but I still would need to hack the wall and the box plaster ceiling. And I'll have a slightly lower ceiling. Also not sure how to mount the hook, to the plaster ceiling or to the concrete ceiling?

3) I thought of tarik wayar from the box lights and control the fan just from the remote, but I'm not sure of this. And I think have to turn on the ceiling lights to be able to turn on the fan. Kinda dumb to have the ceiling lights on during the day just to use the fan

4) Buying a wall mounted fan and put the wire in a casing (or hack the wall). This will look ugly af.

Any other suggestions or ways I can go about this?

Much appreciated.

Buy a stand fan or the standing circulating type.

Cheap, easy cleaning and mobile.

Buy Dyson floor standing fan, sure no ugly.

Don’t use light point for ceiling fan point as the light point wiring is thin, easily to overheat and cause fire issue

Buy KDK wall fan, easy to mount and moves a lot of air.

You may also want to just surface mount the wiring and skim coat over the wiring [https://youtu.be/FyMAI7tIavo?t=245] for the ceiling fan, 0.75mm 2C wire [https://shopee.com.my/Fajar-0.75MM-(42-0.15)-X-2C-PVC-Speaker-Cable-RoHS-100-Pure-Copper-i.61390848.2102863830] can easily be concealed over with skim coat or putty on the ceiling. For the vertical runs back to the switch point its better to try to encase in conduit. Just make sure to match a small MCB (max 6A) with these wires. 0.75mm 2C cable is pretty cheap and will sustain 6A current load (enough for 17 units of ceiling fan operating on full speed). This will be the easiest solution.

If you get a contractor in for the things like adding more power sockets and stuff, they can do for you, this is relatively simple.

Ceiling fan is lousy idea, as you know hot air go up, and ceiling fan blow the hot air down, not a good idea.

Get a circular fan, put it on the floor, cold air will go up and you will feel it is much better than ceiling fan.

You can extend using conduit along the wall edges .. neat and no hacking.

Good to know about the thin wiring for the light point. Thank you for that.

Love the detailed reply. Thank you very much. I don't think I'll go for the KDK wall fan, I think it will look out of place in the house.

It's quite surprising to see a number of people recommending stand fans, I already am surveying my options. Thank you guys!

From your post, it sounded so difficult to install a ceiling fan and therefore stand fan is your next best option. However if you still prefer ceiling fan, you will do it no matter the reason.

Anyway those are forumers opinion, the final decision is still yours.

Just want to clear things up a bit as a builder myself.

In today's construction standard, lightpoint wiring and fan point wiring are the same size ,99% of the time (not dare to say 100%). They both use the same 1.5mm2 copper wire.
And 1.5mm2 is the smallest wire size you can find in any modern construction site. There's no smaller wire size you will find.

So, the wire will heat up story is not accurate and baseless. 1.5mm2 is more than enough for a mere fan point.

In certain condition, some developers may opt to not place a fan hook but actually prepare the point the in the middle of the room.

It gives you the flexibility to either use that point to hang a signature chandelier or light piece, or if you wish to hang a fan, just install a fan hook.
