Hi, I am going to join another company but needed to hand over my passport to Mdec for the new employment pass.
This probably will take 1-2 weeks.
Can I still travelling within Malaysia without my original passport? Should I keep a copy of color photostat passport?

According to Malaysian law, you must be able to id yourself at any time necessary. Means original passport. BUT, although it should be presented together with the original passport an IKAD is the workaround for travels within the peninsula. At least it was always sufficient in the past.

For Sabah and Sarawak, you will need the original passport.
