Hi guys, is it safe to buy those used wooden pallet to repurpose for home deco and gardening?

Are they treated with harmful chemical and are safe for residential use?

Lazada and shoppee is selling. But I wonder if we can get it cheaper elsewhere?

I'm located in Ipoh

Thank you in advance!

I have so many furniture that I DIY from pallet wood. No problem.

You still need to treat them either by paint, shellac or polyurethane.

If you are near an area with a lot of factory, you usually will find alot of discarded wood pallets. Good to ask if they want it first before you take it. Pallets are usually made from pine wood (soft wood).

1. Usually the pallet wood from Europe are better quality of has nicer grain
2. Pallets with stamp markings of DB, HT are good. DON'T take if have marking with MB <-- poisonous

See Ultimate Guide to Pallet Markings

If you decide on this route ... you need alot of hardwork.

1. Strip the plank of wood from the pallet (need pliers, hammer, screwdriver and alot of energy)
2. Sand the wood - to make it smooth (need orbital sander)
3. Treat it - to protect it from the elements and termites

You can reference the work required to repurpose pallets here Repurpose Pallets

The risk of pallet wood is that you really need to sand and smoothen the edges because of sharp splinters and nails hidden within. B-grade Balau hardwood or short lengths of Balau hardwood (available on shopee/lazada) is a better idea IMO. Short lengths are quite economical and since its balau its suited for outdoor usage, e.g https://shopee.com.my/Kayu-Balau-1-X-2-X-4-...8146.6336718902
