HELP why maxis LTE SPEED SLOW IN ZTE MODEM ???

i put in MAXIS SIM into ZTE MODEM (PROVIDED BY MAXIS), default automatic settings

THE SPEED test is always 10-20mbps

where maxis in my IPHONE = 40-50 MBPS

of course compare SAME TIME SAME LOCATION

already CHANGE NEW ZTE modem , already switch ANOTHER MAXIS SIM

still same slow , why ah ???

is it due to

ZTE USING AUTOMATIC LTE SETTINGS ?

OR

ZTE SPEED LIMIT ??

I am the only one using this network

test using WIFI AND LAN CABLE , same slow

The reason is because Maxis network prioritizes connecting to Band 7 instead of Band 3 which is always weaker in signal strength with narrower bandwitdh channel (2x 10MHz). Given that both bands exists, for stupid reasons it'll prioritize connecting to Band 7 instead of Band 3 despite the latter signal is stronger.

If you noticed those China unbranded modems sold on Lazada and other online stores, they come with firmwares which intentionally disabled Band 7 even when marketed for Malaysian market. There's a reason for this CAT4 LTE modems which doesn't support Carrier Aggregation(CA).

Have you tried your Maxis SIM on one of these cheap China OEM branded modems before even if they do not support CA? They'll force connect on Band 3(1800MHz) which has better signal coverage and noticeable speed improvements since Maxis has 2 x 20MHz bandwidth (Band 3) vs 2 x 10Mhz (Band 7).

If your place is less congested and during off peak hours, Band 3 alone should yield around 40-70Mbps.

Your iPhone supports CA which means it can combine both Band 3+Band 7 (similar to cable modem channel bonding) to enable faster aggregate speeds.

Band 7 for Maxis is only 2x10MHz
Band 3 is 2x20MHz.

That means the road is wider for Band 3 which is twice as broad as Band 7.

Band 3 operates at 1800MHz while Band 7 at 2600MHz. Coverage wise, of course lower frequency allows wider coverage.

If your 150Mbps 4G Cat 4 modem does not support CA, you can only choose one band at a time either Band 3 or Band 7.
Band 7 gets the priority to connect first then only if unavailable the system will look for lower bands until it gets lock.

MCMC doesn't understand this flaw and keeps approving 4G Cat 4 modems which supports both Band 3 and Band 7 while not being able to do CA.Ends up the customer always frustrated and his modem keeps locking to Band 7 which has limited bandwidth and getting much slower speed.

one thing for sure you arent normal cat

so what should i do ?

A. throw maxis modem (ZTE brand) and change better modem ?

B. Hack and customise the ZTE modem settings to support alternate BAND ?

C. complaint to maxis and ask them switch band , which is very LOW CHANCES

something to ask , how to know WHICH BAND MY MODEM USING ?

A. If you can yes.Check if your modem allows MANUAL band selection in its settings page. If no such option, then sorry your ISP has just handed you a junk crap piece of hardware.

B. That will VOID your warranty. Better buy your own cheap piece of OEM china hardware which disables Band 7 out of the box.

C. Unlikely Maxis will overhaul their entire country's network to accommodate your complaints. It'sll take a many twice the number of Band 7 base stations to cover the same area covered by Band 3 due to its higher frequency power requirements. That means significant investments at this point of pandemic MCO times?

Here are some suggestions:

https://www.lazada.com.my/products/modified...4342982348.html

Read the specs:
This one clearly states FDD-LTE:B1/B3/B5 TDD-LTE: B38/39/40/41
**Your modem will SEEK to try to lock from higher bands downwards, so if Band 7 not present, it'll try Band 5-B3-B1.Fortunately Maxis do not support Band 5 else it'll again be very slow for you due to bandwidth limitations.

It supports TDD B38/40 which is being used by Yes 4G and Unifi Mobile.

Just make sure Band 7 is not in the list to be safe double confirm with the seller.
These cheap Cat 4 modems don't support CA, so if you're looking for speeds above 100Mbps look elsewhere.

If you've got <RM200 to spare and play with, there're many China OEM 4G modems some even with router features in them which is within your budget. The drawback however is that they don't allow band selection or picking bands to match for CA.

Also try to find out which chipset they use, some use Broadcom, ZTE, Mediatek or Marvell which are good brands to look out for.

Just remember, if the firmware allows Band 7 avoid. That alone is enough to do a trick so that you can increase your connection speed via Band 3.

Router function no use for me becos i add on ASUS router , if use MODEM's ROUTER function would DRAG down modem and lan speed , right

Expensive LTE broadband, if you know what you're buying and how to make full use of their features then good. You can select/disable any bands you want and bond them using CA.

Only thing is are you prepared to spend more than 4X the China OEM models just to get less than 2X the speed boost?

Oh yeah the other thing you need to note is that many of those China OEM LTE router modems don't come with gigabit ethernet ports, that means don't expect to get speeds exceeding 100M with them.

If you're just looking for a 30M/50M fibre replacement/backup line then fine.

I admit I'm not too well versed in the wireless 4G equipment area to comment more on this. The basic ideas and reasons is already mentioned to get you started with your own researching.

Try getting from more prominent sellers directly in China and avoid the local middlemen especially if you can directly source from their factories/warehouses found in Lazada/Shopee. Some of them manufactures modem for branded products such as Huawei/ZTE/Yes 4G except that they market them as OEM branded models.
