You can start with Blender first, it's completely free and the learning curve won't be as steep as 3ds max (imo)

As a 3d visualiser myself, I agree, blender is the way to go for beginners. Free, easier to use than 3dsmax (which is what I'm using), and can produce quite decent renderings. Currently learning it myself.
