the 876 at my place here ( Sarawak) can get below 6k smile.gif

Means the Desa guy tried to pull a fast one on me. Thot it was a good deal as CMY quoted RM7k; how come cheaper over there? Thot AV would be more xpensive takin a/c of the shipping.

Funny thing is Onkyo is manuf. in M'sia but its more here xpensive than in US mad.gif

To Onkyo sifus,

Whether better to go for 7.1 or stick with 5.1 + bi-amp? Currently have the latter and there is a mark improvement in the AQ (bi-amp). I

s it worth getting another pair of speakers and sacrifice bi-amp?

Anyway to modify so can 7.1 + bi-amp on the 905 since I don't use Room 2?

Yep, I tried hooking up my speakers direct to the Onkyo but the sound coming pre-out and to my Holfi was much better. I use the Dali Ikon6 floorstanders. For surrounds it does not really matter unless you have a very big room...

Dali Ikon drool.gif where did u get it? Is it good for HT? Read alot of good vide esp for music

When u guyz listen to audio (CDs) which DSP or surround do u prefer? PLx II / THX / analog / pure audio?

Assuming u do not have a separate set-up for music only.

I normally use PL II but found many Onkyo AVR owners recommend using pure audio. The problem is I have set my main speakers as small (cut off at 60 hz) and pure audio disable the sub. Hence although much warmer sound with clearer highs, it lacks low-end bass.

I don't advise you use Pure Audio if your speakers are not full range (full band), which means it must be able to produce at least 30Hz or lower. Use Stereo mode instead.

With Pure Audio on, everthing will be fed to the speakers because the crossover will be bypassed, and no processing is done by the receiver. If your speakers are not full range, not only you won't be able to hear the low frequencies, but it could potentially hurt the speakers. This is where the subwoofer comes into the picture, to supplement the lower frequencies. Put your crossover correctly and do proper calibration and you're good to go.
*
Got it. Tried listening @ pure audio again and yes the bass was seriously lacking. Check my speaker range and it only goes down to 40 hz. There is a noticable different in the sound quality & clarity btw pure audio and stereo besides the bass hence I rather go back to PLII to get a wider soundstage.

Next - to upgrade to better fronts in order to enjoy pure audio. Dali Ikon 6 whistling.gif

My opinion is that for critical music listeners, AVRs in the range of higher end Onkyos, Denons and even Yamahas do not produce the same level of music as independent pre/power or integrated amps. I have tried hooking up my CD player to the Onkyo and although it is not a blind audition, to my ears the music thru a independent amp is much better than using an AVR to listen to music.

The problem is a lot of people out there would say they do not see a difference between different interconnects and different speakers cables but I do. I guess each individual is different. Being able to hook everything up to an AVR is great. Since everything is then controlled globally. Unfortunately, it is not an option for me. Maybe the Naim solution would work, but it is extremely expensive.
*
Sort of expected this type of answer as we move deeper into the discussion since we r in the audiophile section.

And I do agree that AVR is not fr Hi-Fi discrete listening. Ya, I can hear a huge difference in the music (same Diana Krall CD) from my friend's blue circle pre & power amp + thiel speakers. It like noise (AVR) vs. music (tube amp)

just get a 805, asking a newbie question here..not quite familiar with the settings..
1) while watching dvd movie using dolby digital or dts mode better? wat about if watching concert?
2) why sometims it display THX cinema and sometimes just DTS? depends ont he DVD played?
3) after audyssey setting i found the dialogue of the center speaker rather soft, adviceable for me to manually adjust the level? and where to adjust it?
*
DTS > DD & most DVDs r now encoded w. DTS unless older movies or pasar malam DVDs.

U can default DTS or THX mode when watching DVDs via the set-up menu. Prefer THX as the bass is more umphh.

I oso got the same problem with soft dialogue, thot its due to my centre having smaller drivers then my fronts.
Just go to speaker set-up and adjust the volume but need to adjust it back down when listening to music although these days been using stereo mode thanz to advise fr Onkyo si-fus.

I did the DIY like HornyAngMoh (modified h/p charger) but the fan is going at fairly slow speed, wonder whether can jack into the Zone 2 12V outlet? Anyone tried it? Will I short-out my AVR?

How do u guyz connect ur CD player to AVR? Analog interconnectors or Digital? My Hi-Fi friends insist analog sounds warmer but of course their tube equipments are meant for analog. As for HT equipments, would digital be better?

I am using 6 ohm speakers. According to the web review, the 4 ohm setting will set the power supply to use lower voltage and limit the current to prevent the receiver from overheating when using low impedance speakers.
*
Thot it was the other way - lower ohm will strain the amp and cause more heat?

If ur speakers are rated 6 ohms, by driving it 4 ohms won't it cause damage to amp and/or speakers? Can any si-fu advise as my speakers are rate 6 ohms and I drive it at 8 ohms. Which is better option?

thx augustine:)
1) i found when using dolby digital is a bit louder than using DTS..but cant hear any difference between them.. doh.gif
2) wat about the EQ calibration menu? anything to play around there?
3) currently using 40" LCD HD ready, can i know about the upscaling thing on the 805? wat it means by that is that after upscaling the 2 black stripes on top n below of the dvd movie will dissapear and become full screen?
sorry..newbie here..and first timer own an AVR... cry.gif
*
1. IMHO DTS offers better soundstage and surround effect. Using DD vs. DTS can definitly hear difference mayb not calibrated properly or 'pasar malam' DVD whistling.gif

2. If u already use audyssey EQ, u don't need to do EQ adjustment or else it overwrite audyssey. I feel audyssey does a better job then manual adjustment but need to readjust the crossover of the speakers as its tend to rate my speakers as 'full band'

3. 805 upscales up to 720p i.e. ur DVDs or Astro if connected via HDMI to ur LCD will look better (420i upscaled to 720p); the blackstripes will sometimes still be there depending on ur DVD screen format (u oso cannot control the screen setup on ur LCD)

rakyet, why not juz bought a 7.5cm single fan cost arround RM35,recently saw at PC fair  tongue.gif CD > AVR i'm still using the RCA plug,i'm using Taralabs interconnect at the moment. My CD is Denon 1550AR and Marantz 63KI signature. Saw a used Audio Note CD 1.1 selling < 5k,hati manyak gatal now  tongue.gif

ya-la using single (taken fr my computer) instead of 2 fans like Horny but still fan is slow speed coz the h/p charger output is only 5v instead of 12v. Went to Digital mall but all the fan uses either USB or 12v jacks no 3 pin option.

Means my 'ayam' intercon no good-la doh.gif coz can hear distortion but switch to Toslink no distortion. And they said cables do not make any difference vmad.gif Y use so many CDP? My Hi-fi fren buy mid range CDP (Rotels & Marantzs) and mod & re-bias & use with 30k Thiel speakers rolleyes.gif

branded HDMI player cost around RM400, with my existing still working fine, throw away kinda waste..just thinking save the $$ wait for blu ray to drop or get the hdmi player hmm.gif

if i get the HDMI player, how many hdmi cable to i need? from HDMI to AVR, den from AVR to LCD? 2 HDMI cable?
*
U need to check ur calibration manually after audessy as they default front speakers as full range and sumtimes centre & surround oso. But most likely ur got "all channel DTS" since u r usin pasar malam DVD i.e. made in pasar malam punya DTS. Go pinjam ori DVD and try again.

LG HDMI DVDP can get RM260 + free HDMI cable sumor. For 805 jus connect the hdmi directly to ur LCD (DVDP will upscale to 1080p instead of onkyo's 720p) w. audio into AVR so no need 2 hdmi cables.

Actually, component oso good enuf for DVDs but RM260.00 for 50% more resolution and the satisfaction of pushin ur LCD to its potential & get hdmi cable..... up to ur budget-la

about audyssey auto set up,what're the disavantage if setting the front LR and Center to FullBand ? ( cos mine it set LR and center to Fullband )

Added on December 11, 2008, 11:54 am

Normally i after selecting DTS in DVDP,i juz use DTS with my 876,sometimes i do try THX Neo 7.1 if tangan gatal since no harm, juz personal liking  tongue.gif
*
Very few speakers r fullband (20hz to 20khz) normally cannot go below 30hz unless u got large floorstandin with side woofers. Check your speakers powerband but even if ur speakers can go low, it is advisable to let the sub handle the bass & LFE freeing more wattage to power the mid and tweeters. (altho seems like wastin the woofer section if u got 3 way speakers but this is the advise fr HT si-fus as not to strain your fronts)

U don't have to select everytime, your AVR can default DTS/DD/THX for DVD via set-up menu and u only change if u wanna try other surround modes. Mine is defaulted in THX for DVD and stereo for CD.

THX bass lagi kau but dialog oso softer mayb overall volume not loud enuf or centre speaker 'pariah' cry.gif

erm..means connect HDMI from AVR to LCD, den the DVD just use component cable? so the upscaling will be done by the DVD player? hmm.gif
*
Not sure bout ur question but if u get a HDMI DVDP, then connect directly to ur LCD oso can. Only route audio to AVR so don't need 2 hdmi cable. HDMI DVD player upscale higher resolution then TX805 (1020p vs 720i) No need to connect AVR to LCD via HDMI if ur DVD connect directly to LCD since there will be no output unless ur using LCD's speaker.

If u do not have hdmi DVDP then connect via component to AVR and hdmi to LCD u get 720i only. U still need another toslink cable fr audio fr DVDP to AVR.

876 quoted by CMY RM7k, Desa RM6,700 probably coz I look like 'waterfish' mad.gif

u got my question right...
but now my setup is connect my non HDMI DVDP to AVR using the yellow composite cable? issit call composite cable? hmm.gif
audio using coaxial cable..

so now the case is remain the same connection as b4, but just get a HDMI cable to conenct from AVR to LCD for the upscaling to 720i by 805 right?  hmm.gif

tat day i saw HV selling 876 at RM7.5k and 806 at RM5.5k..u still not 100% waterfish tongue.gif
*
Ya its called composite cable, I was thinkin of component cables (3 cables) which can support digital video.

Its advisable to upgrade ur cable to a well shield HDMI since not much differnet in price with component cable and u 'futureproof' urself. No need to buy xpensive just good quality can connect ur AVR to LCD & let us know whether u can see the difference.

Nearly wanted 2 buy 876 fr Desa but the salesman refuse to give RM6.5k so bought a 905 for RM3.5k instead icon_idea.gif . Now enjoyin 1080p thumbup.gif I oso don't have a HDMI DVDP only using component. Saving $$ fr bulu-ray
