yes, its actually fully hybrid with no gearbox. the engine will be use as generator for the electric motor and when high speed (without gear box as they say will run 1:1 ratio)

slow moving in the city - fully electric from battery
more speed or when battery quite low - electric motor powered by battery + generator( which is from engine)
high speed cruising - engine only

those motor able to handle high speed, it just not efficient on certain speed

They say hybrid mode, 1.5 engine is use to charge the battery. But when high speed cruising, the 1.5 engine is used to move the wheels hence the clutch will be activated.
