nah...not external flash
just some proper lighting would be nice
if u use flash only, u can see a harsh shadow behind the subject
but u couple it with a few light/soft light/diffuse...u can get a soft shadows/bright background/etc
anyhow..it still depends on how u like the background to be...
like u, i also experimenting on lighting position

btw, my lighting involves some table lamp, white paper/plastic cup as diffuser, card board as background
no $$$ mah....
hehe the way i used to shoot my GUNDAM:
1. my room
2. seal my windows with newspapers so dat no light coming in
3. just use internal built in flash only (no other light sources at all)..
4. place GUNDAM about 1.5m away from the white colour wall(didnt used card board as background), so dat the background looks black..
shoot shoot then pening

hahahaha rest awhile then shoot again.. hahahha
will try other lighting next time..
