Hi guys, want to ask about engine oil leaking. Proton Saga FLX.

Lately I've noticed got oil traces in my engine. Suspect leaking because i didn't change the valve cover gasket.

I serviced my car every 5km (change oil). Major service all done at Proton SC.

But when i changed engine oil every 5km, I didn't change the valve cover gasket. So suspect leaking from this.

Question now, is this serious and do i need to go change the valve cover gasket ASAP? Or can i drag it until my next service with Proton then only change?

The leaking is not that much, but I'm still worried if it's dripping and spoil other parts.

Btw, this is not a complaint. I've been driving saga for 6 years already with no major issue and never rosak.

It is not the head gasket.

It should be the valve cover gasket. Nothing serious but better to replace it as soon as you can to prevent further leak.

1. Not norm to change head gasket when change engine oil, head gasket change is consider serious as the cause of it is something else entirely (usually).

2. Need to identify leaking from where, common would be oil sump or valve cover...both cheap to replace.

Yes, valve cover gasket. I always got confused.

I figured it's nothing serious, since I've been driving it like this for 2 months without anything happening. Just want to know if i can stretch it until my next service at Proton SC.

Btw, when i did my last service (80k) at Proton SC, they never advise me about this also. I found it myself

Just replace on next oil change since it is only every 5k. Just occasionally check oil level and if it does not go below L mark then it is ok

Too tiny. Just check oil level every months and topup if necessary. The gasket change may cost about RM100. But nothing serious. Unless u see oil drops on floor daily.

You should be able to drive till the next oil change since your service interval is at 5000 km.

Valve cover gasket leak is nothing major but is good to fix it to prevent minor engine oil leaks. After replacing the gasket, you should also clean the engine so that you can monitor whether there are any other leakages.

Get it checked properly. When you go SC service the next them, ask them to check where it is leaking from exactly.

If it's flywheel oil seal then you might want to delay fixing. If just valve cover gasket or oil filter gasket then it is easy fix. Get it fixed.

normally oil pan gasket break first only valve cover.
you can start your car for 10 minutes and rev some while stationary and see any oil droppings under your car. if no then will just work fine. very minor leak which is very common for aged car.

The SA at Proton SC should have highlight it to you during the service of there is any leaking symptom.

No dripping under the car.. otherwise I'll see stain in the cement..

BTW, oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket not the same thing?

I only go to Proton SC for major service. For standard oil change i do it outside.

So far still okay. My car never rosak.

not very serious. check your oil level from time to time. If its not dropping on floor normally you can schedule a change on the next service. in some cases the oil will dripping on manifold and you get unpleasant burned oil smell. Some workshop claim silicon gasket last longer but a bit pricer.. i remember i used silicon for my persona campro but i cant remember how long it lasted...

Do you know what is the oil grade that your SC/3rd party workshop use?

Maibi the engine oil used too thin that it would leak out anyway.

For next service can consider switching to thicker engine oil; it can help protect the engine to last longer, but when wanna vroom vroom engine will feel selow sikit.

My saga campro always use 10W-40. Already thick enough i think...

I follow all Proton recommendation

Good advice. Thanks.

Most likely i will change at Proton SC, so probably just use normal gasket instead of silicon
