Chinese-owned Elkem to buy REC Solar

A division of the state-owned China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) has agreed to buy Norway’s REC Solar ASA for NOK 4.34 billion ($640 million).

REC Solar on Monday said Hong Kong-based Bluestar Elkem Investment Co. Ltd. would acquire a wholly owned Luxembourg company that would in turn own


REC Solar Holdings AS

and all of its assets and liabilities.

The Chinese group is set to complete the deal through its Norwegian subsidiary, silicon and alloy producer Elkem AS, which was acquired in 2011 by ChemChina’s China National Bluestar.

The agreement remains subject to approval by an extraordinary general meeting of REC Solar shareholders, to be held no later than January 16. REC Solar said its board of directors will recommend the deal to its shareholders.

Elkem CEO Helge Aasen said, "The Elkem Group has a strategic goal to grow its presence in the solar industry. The ambition is to establish a leading integrated PV player."

Aasem added that Elkem and REC Solar, which operates production facilities in Singapore, had developed a strong business relationship and there was a good strategic match between the companies that ensured a combined entity would "have a strong basis for further development of the business by leveraging REC Solar’s leading global brand, strong distribution channels and reputation for quality."




Standing strong with Singapore - REC Group is proudly powering the Covid-19 Recovery Facility at the Changi Exhibition Centre with clean solar energy

REC Group, the international pioneering company based out of Singapore with its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Tuas is helping power the Covid-19 recovery facility at the Changi exhibition center with clean solar energy.


Having turned the Changi Exhibition Centre into a community care facility (CCF) for COVID-19 patients,

the government next expanded the compound with a new community recovery facility (CRF). The latter received its first 500 patients from the CCF on June 3.


With a tight timeline, a reliable partner was sought to supplement the compound with solar power. REC is honored to be that trusted party.

Power for powerful technologies
The compound made good use of technology like robots, UV sterilizing, security systems, and telecommunications. All of which required power. As there were no power lines, diesel generators were used. However, REC provides a solar power solution that would change the situation significantly for the better, cutting down on the CO2 emissions, fumes, fuel use, and noise caused using diesel generators.

The 240.9 kW installation at the Changi site consists of 660 REC Alpha Series solar panels, producing clean energy of about 40,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), equivalent to the average monthly energy use of 100 four-room Housing and Development Board flats.

The REC Alpha Series solar panels designed with its high-power density specifically for installations where space is limited were installed by REC Certified Solar Professional installers on both ground-mounted and tent-structures specially designed to withhold the load of the solar panels. The present system supplies 20 percent of the projected overall energy demand of the recovery facility. The system also indirectly helps to cool the facility, with a 3-degree differential in ambient temperature inside tents.

This is the latest major project empowered by REC high-efficiency products - and one of many in the island nation; the other notable ones being Singapore Sustainable Academy, Singapore Sports Hub, Tiger Beer Brewery among others.
