Lots of my friend back then SPM got lots of A and B, with only 1 or 2 subjects C still don't get offer from matriks or asasi. Need to appeal then only few got accepted, and the rest went to politeknik. Even the best student in my school who got straight A at that time didn't get into medic, appealed, still didn't get, end up she took pharmacy. Lots of non malay/bumi so brainwashed that malay can easily got into public uni without realizing the ones they talked about probably accepted into 'low tier' university or 'unwanted courses', which none of those non malay/bumi won't even apply or rather reject then apply to other private university with the courses they want. I knew few of those non bumi/malay who rejected such offers and instead went to private uni. Me myself didn't get into top 5 university even though my SPM result are 6A 5B(math, add math, english & physic got A1), while my friend who got lower result than me got accepted. Even for among us bumi/malays we were depending on luck.

Btw, for the guy i believe if he appeal he most probably will got accepted, depends on what course he apply. If medic in top uni perhaps a bit difficult, they not only based on matric's result but also SPM. Lots students who got straight A in SPM and CGPA 4.0 in matric also compete for the spots, and even among them might not get even bumi/malays.
