Hi

We are currently engaging a contractor in doing the tiles for the house...and they mentioned something about tiles wastage...I am so confused...our contractor is a chinese guy...and the sub contractor for the tiles..is also a chinese guy..and they converse in Chinese..not sure if its mandarin or cantonese..
I cant understand...my contractor just said there will be wastage..

The story is like this.. for our room, we are laying tiles in a brick pattern..those wood porcelain tiles. I think initially they wanted to put in a grid layout, but we want brick layout.
so, the guys..will have wastage....I understand..they would cut the tiles...but what exactly..do they mean...will there be an extra cost.

More quantity needed to complete the job.

Eg. Grid layout ... 100 pcs, Brick layout ...130 pcs

Eg. 1 piece cut 3 ... now 1 piece cut 2.

More labour hours.

When you do bricks layout, on the edge sides, there will be 'half tiles' right? Often, tiles cannot be cut perfectly in half to fit those half tile placement. Usually you will get 50% and 48~49% tiles. The 50% is used, the other 48~49% will be thrown out. This is due to the width of the tile cutter. Also, depending on the tile quality, they may fail to cut the tiles properly or perfectly. In this case, thw whole tile goes is thrown out.

So yes, with brick pattern there's alot of wastage.

Do consider other patterns if budget is an issue.

Mind asking why u pick brick pattern instead of grid layout?

And yes. alot of tiles wastage..
Normally it's around 20% like that for normal layout. Brick pattern would be double or even triple if the fellow make mistake or tiles quality below par...

Let me answer it for you. Because if you do grid arrangement using wood design tiles (I assume the one TS using is like laminated flooring size), it will look cacat. Have you seen people arrange hardwood flooring or laminated flooring in grid arrangement? hmm.gif

Thank you for the reply guys...the reason I wanted the brick layout was because it was of the wood tiles...has anyone done any other design..like grid...does it still look nice..

So sorry for the late reply.

You can see see https://www.nerangtiles.com.au/tile-layout-patterns.html for some idea. Grid is very traditional. But even that, some developer also can screw up the grid layout laugh.gif
