OK, so it's not safe to leave laptop in the car , have to always bring along the laptop with you. But it's still not safe, now days thief steal/rob your bag without care what's inside your bag even in crowd place.
BTW, what's the solution for those who MUST leave laptop in the car? |

If must leave laptop in your car, hire a security guard for your car! Lol....
Jokes aside, since the most 'enclosed' place of the car is not safe to keep your laptop anymore, I guess even if you MUST keep it in the car, you will HAVE TO carry it with you. This is where backpacks like Targus come in handy. |

How to secure your laptop in your car ?
A: The easiest way is to buy a notebook lock. Before you leave your car just lock your notebook. This will reduce the time they easily grab away and run for it. Besides that, they can't simply pull the lock because this will damage the motherboard. Remember don't buy cheap notebook lock because with a few hit direct on the notebook lock, the lock will totally loose without damage the notebook motherboard. Hope this helps. |

QUOTE(derred @ Aug 10 2007, 12:51 AM) I see. Is this have been like major case in Malaysia or what? I think it's good they go public so those thief at least have to think twice before they do anything. What I'll do I put some clone laptop (anything that can be detect and they thought it's a laptop) then I'll act like im going shoppin'. I'll hide somewhere they can't see. When they come and open my boot, I'll rush and push them into the boot and voila ! Bring to police station and 4-5 times per day plus some help from any volunteers (guys ?!) then these thieves will extinct from the world (or Malaysia). Hahahaha Funny!..but i'll doubt that you will do it in real life..I have heard this type of cases long time ago..maybe 1-2 years back but only now they want to highlight this problem I have friends who only loses their lappies before but also get their car windows smashed..so prevention is much more better than cure Added on August 14, 2007, 5:08 pm QUOTE Alert over hi-tech thieves who scan cars for laptops HI-TECH alert: Inspector Neil Bhole, Sgt Alan Hamlin and Sgt Imran Abbasi.HI-TECH alert: Inspector Neil Bhole, Sgt Alan Hamlin and Sgt Imran Abbasi. EXCLUSIVE POLICE say advanced technology in mobile phones is behind a steep rise in vehicle crime in south Manchester. Thieves are using new 'blue-tooth' phones to detect whether motorists have left mobiles or laptops in their cars. The 'blue-tooth' facility enables thieves to locate compatible electrical items - even if they are hidden away in a boot or glove compartment. Police say the new technology is allowing criminals to selectively steal from cars with expensive laptops and mobile phones which also have 'blue-tooth' facilities. In Chorlton, police estimate that out of the last 35 recorded vehicle crimes, at least 20 involved the use of these high-tech phones. Sergeant Imran Abbasi, of Chorlton Police, said: "It's become quite endemic in Chorlton. They're not picking cars out at random - in many cases they know there's something in there." The thieves are using the same technology that allows mobile phone users to send pictures and clips to their friends, as well as free test messages to strangers with compatible 'blue-tooth' phones. Sgt Abbasi added: "If it comes up on the thief's screen it's a green light to go and break in. Around Chorlton's shopping areas they're more likely to find an expensive laptop." The thieves have been targeting busy shopping districts where they can take their pick of cars parked by shoppers. If they pass a car with 'blue-tooth' electrical items, a signal will appear on the screen of the thief's mobile displaying the make or model of the valuables inside. To counter the new trend police launched the anti car-crime initiative Operation Kancun. As part of the four-week blitz, high-visibility officers swamped Chorlton's shopping centres and gave out advisory leaflets warning motorists of the dangers. The operation has reduced car crime in Chorlton by 50 pc since its launch last month. But Inspector Neil Bhole, head of Chorlton's area policing team, warned: "There are a lot of problems with high-powered business people coming into Chorlton with their laptops in the car. "If they do not switch them off completely, and leave them on standby, there is a good chance they will be stolen." He added: "This type of thing has been around for the last six months but it's getting worse. I must stress that anyone with a laptop does not leave it in their car and that if they do they must make sure it's switched off, particularly if it's a 'blue-tooth' device'. "The technolgy now exists which allows criminals to identify out-of-view laptops and mobile phones in vehicles and selectively break in to steal them." SOURCE This news have been out since 2005..so this confirms that this device has existed long time ago but now only Malaysian noticed it This post has been edited by Notoriez: Aug 14 2007, 05:08 PM |

I would imagine that the powered off wireless component of your laptop acts like a passive RFID?

QUOTE(death_nite @ Aug 8 2007, 04:00 PM) i watched the news....not only dat it can detect ur notebook...they will even try to unlock ur car...they try to read ur alarm wireless signal n then ur car will unlock itself...the size of the detector will b as small as pen... from what i think, it used to detect the notebook using wifi.. so any notebook with wifi will kena, it jus need to send a signal and sent back acknowledgement to detect..more hitech one would b able to determine either its notebook or digital camera... well dats wat i saw in tv3 8pm news....last monday nite... on the other hand, my lecturer own this stuff...n he said it detect ur wifi signal...even u edy shutdown ur notebook, ur wifi still emit small signal...better way is to remove the battery from ur notebook... my opinion? NEVER leave ur notebook inside ur car... edit: i need logical explanation how the hell it can detect battery/cmos battery...erh...battery did emit any signal? i wondering.... i dun think it can detect battery. |

Well...anywhere u leave ur laptop, you never know how safe they are...The best way is keep ur in the bank...hha!
I found in SEC electronic they actually have this kind of so called All Risk Protection Plan. Its upgradable to 3 years. Foe example, u buy a laptop from them, u will entitled for 1 year warranty automatically. If im not mistaken adding RM80 to upgrade for 3 years. This plan works for accident like robbery, fire, lighting, explosion, MAN MADE DISASTER??? what the hell... natural disaster, accidental damage, impact disaster and bursting pipes?? well...in conclusion is reall ALL RISK PROTECTION PLAN... However, the first year, they will cover ur good for 100%, 2nd year would be 75% and the third year would be 50%...maximum is 3 years i guess... No worries after all...Dell has this kind of plan too! but too bad it only available in US...damN! we shud proposed this to Michael Dell! But most important is....backup the data dude....back up into ur email...and it exist forever... Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(karhoe @ Aug 9 2007, 10:24 PM) thanks but i think you could justify it by doing a simple CBA....RM10 ringgit per valet park vs RM5k ringgit (broken window and laptop which i always bring) its a calculated risk.... QUOTE(ronnie @ Aug 10 2007, 08:16 AM) Sometimes the valets could be in with the laptop hijackers... hehehehe True....but usually i park my car myself....never let them touch it....u give em a little yamcha and they be ur personal lookout based on my experience....Trust no one. I'm quite sure the valets are not responsible is stuff are stolen, right ? After someone stole stuff from my car at Sunway Pyramid parking, i don't trust the CCTVs, guards or those people working at the parking |
