Hello, I would like to ask that is MEng or BEng in Electrical and Electronic engineering(EEE) better for future employment and salary in Malaysia in engineering sector? Because both MEng and BEng seem take the same 4 years to complete so Im struggling to decide on which one to go for. I know that currently bachelor holders for engineering is quite common but is MEng gonna help in my future job employment and salary? Thank you.

MEng = BEng in Malaysia, and other regions, except in the UK. The benefits and salaries I’d say is the same.

Difference between MEng and BEng/BSc: This is confirmed by JPA, and MEng is not an actual Master’s (at least in Malaysia; the actual Master’s are: MPhil, MSc, MRes, MLitt etc), the reason that people take MEng in the UK institutions is to fulfil the chartered Engineer status in Malaysia.

Thank you for your reply. So the malaysia's company(private and governmental) don't really give more advantage to the MEng compared to BEng? Btw, do you have the link to the news/post regarding to the JPA's clarification?

Afaik yeap, unless applicants are based in the UK/EU.

Below is the Translated Version for the MEng part (this is applicable to all undergraduate Master’s like MSci, MPharm).

“ The Master's Degree Program applied for is not a program that is assessed on par with the Bachelor's Degree for the purpose of appointment to the Public Service. For example, the Government has stipulated that a Master of Engineering (M.Eng) qualification from universities in the United Kingdom is only eligible for appointment purposes to positions that require entry qualification at the Bachelor of Engineering or RIBA Part II level for architecture studies it only recognized as equivalent to a Bachelor of Architecture Degree only”

More details on this can be found via the link below - Part 2(f):

For fresh grad, MEng earns a few hundred more than BEng in electronic field.

Suggest you to do part time MEng after you are emplyoed first.

UK MEng (4 years) - Accredited by BEM, able to go for PE (Professional Engineer)
Msia BEng (4 years) - Accredited by BEM, able to go for PE
UK BEng (3 years) - Not accredited by BEM, require additional education to go for PE, e.g. MSc

In terms of salary wise, some companies actually acknowledge MEng as 'Master' and graduates receive a higher starting salary. But only a few companies do that, mostly larger MNC companies.

In terms of education wise, not sure for other engineering but for Chemical Engineering, MEng (UK) student did an additional Research Project compared to BEng (Msia) student with only FYP Project. Research experience is important if you want to go for PhD in the future or R&D field, but not very relevant in other fields.

Based on corporate experiences, it doesn't make any big different in term of salary for Master or B in Mlaaysia context, Neighboring countries, you might stand better advantage in term of starting pay.

With master degree, you might have better option for career(can be Lecturer)
