Hi

I would like to gather more opinions about plaster ceiling (with light boxes etc). Of course some designs can really enhance the outlook of the unit, but what about the pros and cons? People mentioned about dusts etc (is it that bad?). People who had plaster ceilings at their home - what's your opinion?

Thanks!

Pro:
Design
Lower high ceiling
Ambient lighting + Accent Lighting design

Cons:
Added Cost
Dust, Spider Webbing -> Just clean them annually together with ceiling fans and curtain rails

Plaster ceiling allows you to have different designs and is interesting if done right. Many people tend to overdo it and the effect is worse. The trick is keep it simple rather than complicated.

Pros:
1. Cleaner and aesthetically better looking as you can hide cables and wiring; fix downlights; install cassette airconditioner while hide the ducting; hide fan hooks, etc etc.
2. Enhanced look if done right

Cons
1. Additional cost
2. Lower the ceiling height.

Ooouch, means extra cleaning work. I think fans can last more than a year but if the L-boxes are not cleaned from time to time will it be obvious? and issit ok to use wipe cloth to clean it?

Normally i just dust the outer gaps with with a feather duster (inner, i dont really bother as its not visible), never spent time wiping with cloth.

This is an old design, modern design dont use this design anymore because of the dust it will accumulate inside it.

Pro:
Look nice and good heat blocker

Cons:
Prone to water leakage

Pros:
Can install recessed lights
Can position lights exactly where required
Lightbox for indirect/ambient lighting
Can route wires in the plaster ceiling

Cons:
lower ceiling height

Position of lights is very important. Get a designer to position the lights for your purpose.

regarding the good feel/nice outlook factor, we usually don't switch on all the fancy lights every day or most of the the time right? will it look "not so nice" if only the main downlights are switched on instead?

Hi do you mean L boxes are considered as old design dy? Mind to share what are the latets/current designs? and designs that are practical? That will be really useful.

Other cons is, if they get wet, it will be damage and is costly to fix.

Is there a way to achieve nice lighting without plaster ceiling?

Yup, even though it looks good but not practical and considered outdated so many years ago but im not sure wether this design make a comeback as current trend. As u can see in my previous reply, ive attached my plaster ceiling that was made 2009. No gap between both ceiling steps.
