http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=798&num=1i'm assuming this is what intel/amd will go next... more threads per core(hyperthreading+)?...
any ideas on how the industry will head next?
Intel and AMD have already detailed their general plans for the next few years. That will give you an idea on where the industry will head.

IMHO
AMD were already using similar techniques in their K5 series of processors for the home PC users.
Using RISC technology and doing more per cycle.
Now the trend is to add more performance without generating too much heat and consuming too much power.
Thats why they gone dual core I suppose but Intel's FSB problems will still haunt them.
AMD doesn't do FSB thats why they can add cores/processors like crazy which is why they still dominate the server market.
I don't think it will go more than 4 cores after AMD comes out their "true" 4 core processor for sometime.
They will probably add more speed and tricks until software catches up.
If not we'll all suffer.
Theorectically a 4ghz 4 core system running on unoptimized system will only use one core thus you've only got 1ghz.
K5 is so old, i don't think the comparison is valid anymore. A 4ghz system runs at 4ghz whether you use one core or 4.

LOL it still can't do X86
of course not, they don't have a x86 license.
