Hi K..

Hope you all are doing well.

Wanna ask the sifus here..

i am looking for a travel camera.

but right now i am clueless about which option that are good for me.

i will be bringing my kids (3 of them), with my waifu and a maid for any of my holiday plans.

i am planning to do a travel log, so looking for a cam budget around 1k.

i m not sure, should go with go pro cams?

user posted image

or

normal digital cam?

user posted image

or dslr?

user posted image

each of them seem to have pro and cons which is gonna be significant to me.

go pro - i am clueless how this work, is it only for like a moving camera recorder?

normal digital cam - seem cool but i am worried about night video, is it good enough, and what about the sound?

dslr - i m sure the quality is top notch but it does not seem very mobile and easy to handle especilly with my case?

or should i just get a good phone camera?

i am planning go record the journey at least 90 of the time. so yeah looking to transfer the data to my imac every day.

i wanna hook it to my kids stroller or my chest for recording to give me some freedom to my hand.

so need your expert view.

interms of the item criticallity, should be as below (Unless advised otherwise)

1. Mobility
2. Quality video & Sound
3. features
4. durability.

appreciate your view.

thanks sifu. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Im using go pro hero 8 black . Works great recording cycling video with hypersmooth on but the clips can only record like 5 mins each having me to combined clips . Which is a bitch to do.

I would recommend getting a6400 -6500 with zoom lense. That would be the best starter kit for vlogger not GoPro

if you want good voice recording .. nothing beat external microphone ... so no different between phone or camera ...

of course my a6500 or a7iii can produce better quality ..
but going out with famili ... with kids ... you need to factor all those ...

use burst mode .... and pick best picture and delete the rest

Dslr quite thick la, u need small bag for it or can let it hang aroind ur neck or shoulder.

Or may go old school style, go for handycam, or camcorder. I think can get good camcorder with 4K recording. But i not sure if it can take good still photo or no, but i believe it does. But wif camcorder u can get good quality video already, so from the video itself u can use some editing tools in pc to capture any still pic that u like from the video.

If mobility is ur concern, then just go for go pro. Go pro can say the best u can have now, and easy to carry here and there. It do takes good quality picture. But pricey la hehe.

Example camcorder pic.

Usually youtuber using go pro and quality camcorder right? With external microphone. Then no worry abt taking still photo, u can edit from video, like screenshot something like that.

Can consider Sony rx100 if you have the budget. No need to get the latest version lah. Maybe one or two years ago gen good enough for your use. It's portable, good lens, can record at 4k and easy to use.

I heard go pro if high end one can record up to 40-60 minutes. The battery also tahan til that time. U need bigger capasity memory card for that long shot video, 128gb and above.

Combine clips, if once u familiar wif the editing tools it wouldnt be problem much.

I always answer this question by asking what phone are you using? If you have a crappy camera phone, spend the money on upgrading to a better camera phone. The one I always recommend is the Pixel 3 XL or better.

Especially when you are travelling with families, no point carrying something bulky unless you have a very specific niche shooting criteria. 99% of what you want to do during holiday can be achieved with a good camera phone.

If you die die also think a camera is needed, then EOS M50 is a good choice to go for. Relatively cheap for it's price and with the EF-EFM adaptor, there are plenty of cheap Canon lens to use on this small wonder. Af least get it with the 22mm f2.0 and/or budget permits get the wide anle one too if you like to shoot those type of shots.

Good luck in hunting down the right camera.

Where are you going though that makes you extra concerned over low light scenes?
Anyways the rx100 would give you better quality than any phone camera by virtue of the sensor size itself.
In the end have to consider that the best camera is what you have at hand and how you handle it.
Iphones generally shoot pretty good video. Even your iPhone 7 can produce good vid, maybe just get a mobile gimbal for steady footage.

I do not recommend Sony a6500 or other APS-C from Sony, don't get me wrong, I am using Sony a9 myself, it is just that there is not much lens choice for APS-C Sony but all their good stuff is high end.
I do not think you need interchangeable lens, you can look at Fujifilm XF10, X100F, Ricoh GR and the likes.
I don't like the new RX100 as I find that quality isn't that much better than iPhone quality, despite zoom lens.

If you want interchangeable lens, m43 have a lot to offer, Panasonic GX9 take good pictures, have a lot of choice in lenses and take 4k videos, if need professional quality, can go GH5.

The general rule is the bigger the sensor, the better the night performance is going to be. Just have to balance the practicality side of the problem.

As for sound, that one all internal mics gonna give some kind of problem with either wind noise or weird volume. That said, ever considered something like an osmo pocket?

tbh, get a good phone now
iPhone 11, pixel
those new phone you'll be surprised with what they can perform under low light
especially iPhone 11 I'd say it can beat most of the entry mirrorless + kit lens IF you don't have any photography knowledge

camera doesn't make your photo better if you just simply click and take photo (except RX100 but that is expensive)
camera gives you the freedom to adjust parameter to capture all sort of photography, BUT!!! you must know how to adjust those parameter. if you don't plan to learn photography basic, your photo might be even worse than what phone can produce

for example you said wanna take firework, you need to understand exposure, iso, and maybe need tripod as well if you don't have good control
if you don't learn these knowledge, your photo will end up horrible
and many phone nowadays actually can take firework photo pretty ok too
some camera do provide some preset setting yes, then it comes to next thing: portability

phone is miles way better for portabiity, you carry a phone anywhere, your phone has GPS that can geotag your photo,
your phone allow you to do live stream if you want, or upload your photo to cloud almost instantly
you have tons of editing software to edit photo/video on the spot
you can charge your phone when recording video (don't be surprised nowadays many camera still does not allow you to charge while recording)
you don't worry about carry extra battery/accessories of your camera

if you think it takes some skill/time to learn how to take good photo/video with phone, those mirrorless/dslr camera actually require more than that
but i'm not discouraging you not to get camera la, just dun expect camera is 100% better than phone out of the box

What u said is true but if u don't have the gear u will never be able to learn those. U want sharper images better color reproduction the puny sensors in ur phone will never be able to give u those.

Go for gopro hero8 black. I think this should be ok for ur budget. Below rm2k i guess. Many good review about this gopro hero8 black in night video.

Doesnt matter it is a action camera, still can be use for travel and fun video recording.

ya phone sensor definitely has their limitation
just want to say that some people expect buy any dslr/mirrorless = 100% get better photo result out of the box
but don't even wanna learn about basic, snap jpg, use auto preset, then say why snap night time always dark/noisy/blur (due to some camera bad auto preset that crank up iso/exposure and they dun know anything about it)
need to adjust our expectation and learn photography basic to make your camera shine or else camera cry

Really done over and over already, and since Iphone now can take HDR picture and the advantage of direct connectivity.
I know a lot of people buy RX100 and only used a few times and sell it since they realize they actually use phone more, plus phone have better stabilization and accessory like gimbal is much cheaper.

So I rather would recommend people to buy something a lot better if for a dedicated camera, say m43 and above.
Now Fujifilm XF10 and Panasonic GF9 same price or cheaper than RX100, GX9 also not a lot more expensive, I don't know why the reason pick a smaller sensor camera with non interchangeable lens.

For that amount of budget, you wont get most of the options like long recording, low lights capability, handsfree and good voice recording.

As someone already pointed out, the best camera is the one that you have with you. For someone who is traveling with family and have to bring a lot of stuffs, nothing beats the form factor of a phone.

Modern phone these days does wonders like low light capabilities and good resolutions, if anything just seluk poket and start recording/snapping.
