Ant's Malaysian e-wallet venture with CIMB in talks to raise US$150m — sources



SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 21): A Malaysian e-wallet operator owned by CIMB Group and China's Ant Group is in advanced talks with investors to raise at least US$150 million to fund expansion plans, four sources familiar with the matter said.

The coronavirus pandemic has propelled demand for digital payment services around the world, but Malaysia's market is particularly competitive with nearly 50 players. The venture, TNG Digital Sdn Bhd, says its Touch 'n Go eWallet is the country's biggest with more than 15 million registered users.

TNG Digital is negotiating with global banks, asset managers and others, the sources said, declining to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to media.

PETALING JAYA: It is perhaps the much-awaited news for most Malaysians. Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd will be making two massive changes this year.

All Touch ‘n Go parking surcharges, which have always been a bane among consumers, will be taken away by the first quarter this year.

By the end of 2021, customers can also opt to purchase Touch ‘n Go cards that can be reloaded directly from their phones using the Touch ‘n Go eWallet.

These two matters have been among the top grouses raised by Touch ‘n Go customers.

The company, which is emphasising on a more customer centric approach as it moves forward, has decided to make these developments possible.
