Hi all, i'm new to this TV and soundbar thingy. So, backstory is that i am renovating my new house and when it comes to the technology part, imma dummy. So here i am getting opinions on how should i proceed with my TV and Soundbar decision.

I have like around max 7k~7.5k to work with.

Since the viewing distance is like 3.25m, i checked online and saw the general rule of thumb for 4k UHD tv should be 70" upwards. With my limited budget available, i would like get a proper setup.

TV usage will be just for netflix/bluray and simple stuff.

so with that budget, i'm looking at

TV: Samsung 70 Inch TU7000 Crystal UHD 4K Smart TV(RM 5,229)/Hisense 75 Inch 4k UHD Smart Android TV B7500(RM 6,000)
Soundbar: Yamaha YAS-209(RM 1,480)/Sony HT-X8500(RM 1,499)/Samsung Q60R(RM 1,499)

The salesman at harvey norman said something along the lines that if tv is not oled display, there is no need to get a sound surround soundbar? I don't really understand what he meant by that. anybody care to explain the corelation between OLED and the sound system?

By all mean don't get the OLED yet. LG just issue a recall for their OLED TV due to heat issue. Just on the safe side. Get the IPS panel one. Samsung QLED is good enough for daily usage.

I am not able to afford OLED or QLED while still getting a sound bar. So right now, i'm just surveying my options as long as the tv and audio quality ain't too bad and i'm good to go. Maybe can afford an upgrade if i get a promotion/pay raise. but covid... bye.gif

Yeap, saw this merdeka thingy already, but i'm actually looking for a 70" to fit the viewing distance. If my living hall is smaller, most definitely i'll take that samsung, that's a very good deal. cry.gif

Okay, i'll have a look at the merdeka promo and see if anything fits. Actually, was looking more to recommendations from others on any good tv's that fits my budget.

but guess samsung is great as well smile.gif

You can directly ask the sales person go bang wall.

Even though OLED is perfection in output but not means all LED TV is crap.

My reason reply is for asking you tell the sales person go bang wall only. tongue.gif
I had no recommendation on your TV choice as I am poison by OLED already, anything others than OLED for the moment won't be in my list. Haha!
*
lol, totally forgot to ask him the reason why he says that. Yes i understand OLED is superior in every way but very much out of my budget to get OLED of 70". Perhaps i shouldn't extend my living room that far out in the first place ohmy.gif could've saved money and make do with a superior cinema experience haha

Judging from your layout image, your actual viewing distance should be about 3.5m, your eyes are not at the edge of sofa, if you know what i mean. Also have you viewed 70" in the shop at the exact distance you want? I realized that all these online viewing distance recommendation varies a lot. Why not take a measuring tape and try to view in a shop at that distance?

Also, who else is watching the TV? At the same recommended distance for 65" my wife feel that it's still too big, and makes her dizzy. So the take away is that diff people will have diff preferences for viewing distance.

Also, are you an audio person or a visual person? which is more important? Screen vs sound?
*
Oh ya, i get what you mean, the viewing distance need to plus abit. For me 70" or 75" is good to go, maybe because i'm still considered young, so i don't have to strain my eyes too much to look across the screen. I guess i will bring a long a measuring tape the next time i go tv shopping.

Those watching tv will be me, gf and mum for most parts. But i feel for the old folks, they won't be too comfortable with large tvs? the older generation are, as you know, accustomed to the regular sized TV. I have not asked their views about this, but they said i should go with whatever i feel is relevant. So, i'm seeking advice here.

For me, i don't really have a preference on min maxing each aspect of visual or audio, as long as the quality is fine and doesn't give too much maintenance issue, i'm good to go. But if i really had to choose, i'd go with visual more.

I'm just worried at viewing distance of 3.5m, if the TV is like 60"(initial thoughts of buying) or so, it'll be too strenuous to see the details on the tv.

Viewing distance is very subjective, must try then only you know the "feel".

For me my TV is 55", and my sofa is less than 2m apart, eyes a bit strain already. Now upgrading to 65" with the same viewing distance.
*
If that's the case then i'll need to go myself to test the distance out. by the way, is the soundbar choice also affected by distance as well?

Thats the lowest end of qled. Price performance ratio is really bad.

Do u really need 70inch? If i were u, i just go with 65inch x900h.
*
Oh, so that samsung QLED is not worth the price-performance ratio. b/c the salesman was telling me how good that tv was .

Yeah, i'm thinking either 70" upwards. might settle for the X900H

Btw, what do you think of that samsung Crystal UHD series TUxxx?

QUOTE(neekun @ Jul 29 2020, 11:38 PM)
At least get q80t. If price is your concern, go for Sony X900H 75".
*
That would do as well, but the price of 75" is not out yet right.

For Netflix, I would seriously consider the 2018 OLED 65" Panasonic FZ950(?) still selling for RM8K+ on Lazada. I think might may even come with free Technic sound bar, not sure.

Eh, i seldom hear about panasonic tv's being recommended, are you the user of this model? any good?

Agreed, btw, since your distance is about 10ft, I feel 75inches is a little too big?! Do visit store and stand/sit at that distance to view it.

Hmm, i've based my selection upon the guide for 4k UHD. It says 1.5 times the diagonal length of screen for 4 UHD. I've went to the harvey norman to check the distance , ok-ok lah. maybe not viewing for a long period of time, may need input from family members as well haha
