10 yo (year 2000) Iswara 1.3 M/T that I had driven until last December, when I traded it in. The problems and replacements over the years:
1. Honk kaput after the steering lock accidentally came loose and pressed on the steering wheel. Was my fault.
2. Replaced headlight bulb and side indicator light bulb once each on 2008.
3. Replaced aircon switch on 2006.
4. engine lubricant leaking, replaced seal and timing belt on 2009.
5. Minor brake fluid leakage, 2008.
6. Driver power window motor, 2008.
7. Odometer died on 2004, never replaced.
8. Gauge cluster backlight died on 2009.
Another family car, a 1.5 Wira M/T (year 1997). Had been driven 10 years before it was sold.
1. Door lock, which would jump up and down when remote button is pressed.
2. Door rubber seal, which prevented the window from winding down.
Most of these were due to wear and tear after many years of use. I really abused the Iswara, but it soldiered on year after year.
On the other hand, my sister's 4 year old Vios:
1. Squeaking from driver side seat belt. Squeaks on every single bump on the road.
2. Droning sound from passenger side front wheel, found out to be the bearings. waited 8 HOURS at the sc to get it fixed because the ball bearings had to be pumped into their sockets by an external vendor!
3. The remote buttons, made of rubber, dah koyak long long time ago. Now there are two holes where you can see the buttons and circuit board inside.
4. Tyre rims bent. Dunno how that happened.
Worse, my cousin's new BMW:
1. Brake failed. He went to the SC, threw the key at the service advisor without saying a word. The foreman went and test the car, then came back and announce "Eh, you car no brake."
2. Door lock failed, cannot open even after unlock via remote.
3. Brake light failed, replacement costs 8k.
His wife don't dare to drive that car.
My point? All cars have their problems. It is really unfair to point at Proton and say they suck, when you can spend twice the amount of money to get a Toyota only to encounter the same friggin problems. You get what you paid, or worse, like my cousin, you get lemon.
