Won't call it a fancy word but its a definitely an activity
Where you are learn something that is usually upon the veil of common learning
Common folks may understand the surface but why you are learning us something beyond common folks understanding

Example ppl may know the functions of common speaker setup with this cable goes here and there but you are literally looking into voltage and amp frequency and dc power input and tuning adjustments that even common folks like have no slightest of idea of what you are doing with the screw tuning it up and down and adjusting volume dial

Well to explain deep learning you require understanding of basic ai and machine learning or neural network in the first place.

At the most simplest term is that you use some algorithms to interpret some sort of data (interpretation is being used loosely here). Then when you connect and layer these algorithms and each layer might provide different interpretation then you have a deep learning system that is able to automatically (also loose definition in term of supervision) learns from unstructured and unlabeled data.

Hope its not Greek to you, but IT/IS people always sensitive in the term used as it might lead to different meaning.
