QUOTE(hksgmy @ Jun 14 2020, 08:26 AM) Not familiar with any of the brands, but FWIW, we bought a Philips 55” TV recently for the guest bedroom, and Philips was apparently bought over by some Chinese company years back. No issues with that TV so far. In fact, I’d say it’s on par with my somewhat older Samsung models. Since when Chinese company bought over Philips? Where you get such story?

QUOTE(JoeK @ Jun 14 2020, 02:03 PM) No and yes. No. Chinese company never bought Philips. Yes. They just bought the TV division If I'm not mistaken It was between Sharp and Hisense, not Philips. https://www.lifewire.com/hisense-now-has-sh...-assets-1847076Philips even bought over a Chinese company that produce LED lighting. Philips has joint venture with Agilent to form Lumileds.

QUOTE(JoeK @ Jun 14 2020, 02:14 PM) Eh.. Sharp is under Hisense now? No lah. Only for North and South America Hisense in control of the business and using Sharp name but it is a 5 years deal starting 2015 or 2016 (can't remember). Sold the factory but not selling the company. Sharp is not doing well but in Japan probably still no 1 in TV probably. In Malaysia, their panel factory also closed in Northern region. If you read TV review for the US, Hisense brand frequently on top selection as well. Sharp used to be no.1 LCD TV panel in the US, but now Sharp is not happy with Sharp TV produced by Hisense; producing low quality TV under Sharp brand name. In 2019, Sharp has reacquired its Brand name for the US market from Hisense. Start selling its hi end model like 8k TV. Sony also cannot compete in low end market and concentrating on mid and hi end market.

QUOTE(red4900 @ Jun 15 2020, 09:32 AM) ? Phillips are still Dutch owned, no? QUOTE(hksgmy @ Jun 15 2020, 09:49 AM) Yes, I'm sorry I didn't clarify completely - just the TV division was bought over by the Chinese. I think you've confused between Philips and Sharps. Philips has never sold its TV division. It was Sharp that sold its factory in South America and gave Hisense tight to produce Sharp brand for America. The TV division was not sold. It was only for a period agreement. Read my previous post.
