Hi All

I wanna know how much it cost to run electrical appliances, in my case it is air purifier.

Since I switch it on almost 24/7, i wanna know how much it cost to run per hour.

1) Air Purifier 1 - Label says power consumption is 10w
2) Air Purifier 2 - Label says power consumption is 90w

Assume TNB's lowest tariff rate i.e. RM0.218 per kWh

Anybody here can help? TIA

If you have something that consumes 1000W, then you will be using 1 kW every hour, for a price of
(1000/1000) * 0.218 = RM 0.218 every hour, or 21.8 sen per hour

If 2000 W consumption....
(2000/1000) * 0.218 = RM 0.436, or 43.6 sen per hour

If you have something that consumes 90W then you will be using
(90/1000) * 0.218 = RM 0.019 (less than 2 sen per hour at the 0.218 rate)

Do take note of the tiered tariffs. If you're always consuming close to say, 300kWh (next tier starts at 300 or 301kWh), the new clothes drier can increase your electricity bill by a lot.

Wow good info, I actually always wondered the same thing.

Just buy the 3 pin plug adapter which measure the kwh consumption. Then plug in the air purifier and run for 4-5 hours to get average per hour. Great device can use to check consumption of TV, aircon fridge, ps4.

I measure it once using energy metre, bought from shopee for rm30 only

Got some tariff per watt need to be considered. End up estimating around rm260 and the bill came in around rm275, abit deviate since i only measure quite accurately power hungry appliances like air cond, refri,air fryer, microwave and cooling/heating stuff.

that is ok, i made an assumption of the tariff to be 0.218/kWh. if really follow the tariff block, quite hard to calculate. I guess for convenience can just take the average tariff la, if u use 500 kWh, then can just use average rate at 0.356 per kWh.

Tariff A - Domestic Tariff
For the first 200 kWh (1 - 200 kWh) per month sen/kWh 21.80
For the next 100 kWh (201 - 300 kWh) per month sen/kWh 33.40
For the next 300 kWh (301 - 600 kWh) per month sen/kWh 51.60

where do u plug in this device? u plug into just 1 plug, but can estimate for whole house? or need to measure one by one?

Abit hassle but ya i plug and measure one by one.. u take rate per hour, then measure how long use.

I plotted cumulative usage due to tariff block, higher wattage u use, higher bills since each tariff different charge.

If you want to run it 24/7, better to work out the cost per month, since the tariff differs at each tier... and not just based the cost on the lowest tariff.

Below are the tariff, and how they increase from one level to the next...

1 - 200kwh 0.218
201 - 300kwh 0.334 .. 53%
301 - 600kwh 0.516 .. 54%
601 - 900kwh 0.546 .. 6%
> 900kwh 0.571 .. 5%

(From the 1st tier to the 2nd, it increase by 53%...)

Using the 90w purifer = 0.09kw x 24hr x 30days = 64.8 kwh

That's already 65% of the 100kwh quota in the 2nd tier.

If using the tariff in the 3rd tier = 64 x 0.516 = RM33.02

(If using the tariff of 0.218, it is RN13.95. Less than half of RM33. )
