D40x pictures come out very nice without much tweaking of in-camera settings. 400D pictures don't look as nice at default settings, so you gotta tweak the settings a bit, plus you gotta know how the metering on the 400D works, or else you're gonna get no-so-nice pix.
In other words, if you go for 400D, you gotta know what you're doing...

yup. i agree. everybody hav different eyes with different point of view.
so far i'm not satisfied yet with my D40x becoz still reading the manual. not using his full power
