Tried early this morning, 8am, i ran Speedtest and Testmy.net
Still running on the Free 1GB Productivity.

In my area , on Speedtest, I managed up to 10Mbps spike (max speed before it drops off) before finalizing at 9.2Mbps
Testmy.net yield around 8.3Mbps max. Between 6-8Mbps Average.

Conclusion? I am far away from the tower. nearly 1KM  sad.gif

Here is the speedtest when i stand right next to the tower, not real world test.

Another tower test, also next to it.

FYI, when I previously tested with Umobile next to a tower, I managed higher speeds.

My short answer will be congestion + inteference (SINR) in your area. Mine is also getting random 12-36Mbps download on any regular day. If I goto other areas, I can get 60-80Mbps download.

But how do you know you are connected to the same tower you mention ? Do you have your phone showing connected to a particular Cell ID tower or eNodeB ID ? hmm.gif

In my area, my line regularly switch between two towers within <500m, and each tower I may connect to different band each (3, 7) or both (4G+)
Behind my house, there is an even nearer 3rd tower (<300m) but perhaps the antenna is not pointing optimally towards the back of my house (which is blocked by other houses as well). Also I'm mostly at the front part of the house (living room, master bedroom)

Hi there,
Yes usually I check and monitor what enode ID it frequently uses via Network Cell Info Lite app.
Then I use that eNodeB ID and search on Cellmapper to locate the estimated location.

Then later I take a drive to go hunt for that specific tower.
And when the dBm signal shows a strong signal then I know I'm at the right tower. Kinda like using a metal detector on a treasure hunt.

But what I cannot understand is why the BSC would select a further tower if there is a tower located nearer to my current location (home).
Not just Maxis. Other telcos also exhibit such behaviour.
*
When you are at the tower, look (estimate) on the direction and angle of the tower antennas. Open your phone compass, write down estimate degrees of north east west south. Mark the exact location of the tower.
Go home, do the same phone compass thing again. Then open google map or Cell Mapper. Try to see if you have a direct line of sight to the antenna. Most of the antenna has about +/- 70-100 degrees coverage. And each tower normally has 2-3 sectors. It does not cover all 360 degrees.

I use this sample from forums.whirlpool.net.au
Why the green house is not connecting to the nearest tower (90444) but to a further tower (90854) ? It's because the angle/direction of the antenna is strongest and direct for the further one. The other two nearer one 90444 and 90900 does not have a direct antenna from tower.
(Ignore the 91405 as it is at a different elevation level than the house)

If I am using the latest hotlink prepaid video plan will it be converted to another plan ? I am curious what this plan is as I only am using Data, maybe will top up once every 2 months for 3 days or something like that ( backup sim for data ) as sometimes my main line won't have network coverage in my working area.

Thanks for the replies guys / gals.
*
Yes, it will convert to other plan. My backup sim just switch from Hotlink Superrr to Hotlink WM Plan for 365 days validity. I recall it mention free 500MB data or something, but so far I can't find it in my Hotlink app hmm.gif

I believe all Maxis plans are getting throttled at 1.5mbps during night time because my current Maxis 188 plan would never go higher than 2mbps during night time for FB and YouTube.

I might test again tonight to see if any amendment has been made.
*
Confirm lah. I got two lines. One personal MOP98. Another is Busines128. Both also start to throttle YouTube to 3Mbps at 8:00pm sharp everyday since MCO period

Maxis should not do this to their postpaid customers. I am on the brink to switch to other telcos after >20 years as MOC member bye.gif

That's super unfair for postpaying RM138 per month = should downgrade to prepaid Maxis HUP 35/45.?

I wonder what speeds the even richer Maxis Business postpaid subscribers are getting between 8pm and 12am MCO.? Seems Maxis has many super-rich business subscribers.

.
P S - My postpaid U Mobile GX50 is not throttled to 0.5Mbps or 500kbps (= 8pm to 1am) if I do not exceed the monthly FUP data limit of 150GB.

Last I check few weeks/months ago, 8pm-12am SocMed (YouTube/etc.) throttled to 3Mbps (as announced by Maxis end-2020). Others still on best effort and depends on your area coverage/signal strength/congestion/etc. which I can get 10-30Mbps at that time. Maybe I'll monitor again this few days.

Note: 1GB Free Daily quota finish for the day.

Just run some check using Maxis Business Postpaid sim card in modem for comparison 8pm-12am

Can go beyond 8Mbps but my area is congested, hence download is slower than upload. But during non-peak hours, I have seen my download peak at 70-80Mbps but normally constant around 30-40Mbps.

Urban area, high density/people. Tower distance roughly 300 metres.

So I guess the Hotlink Prepaid throttle does not apply ?

So, the super-richer Maxis Business Postpaid subscribers are not throttled  or are throttled less severely(= 8Mbps.?) daily during MCO 8pm to 12am while all other poorer Maxis non-Business prepaid and postpaid subscribers are throttled more severely.

Seems the poorest Maxis prepaid subscribers are throttled to 500kbps/0.5Mbps while the poorer Maxis non-Business postpaid subscribers are throttled to 2Mbps.

This is bad customer service. Imagine paying Maxis RM138 per month for 2Mbps from 8pm to 12am daily.

I did another test again, cause previously in 2020 during MCO even this Business line is also throttled to 3Mbps YouTube between 8pm-12am. From the monitoring graph, I can really see it flat out at 3Mbps at exactly 8:00:00pm onwards if I'm streaming YouTube.

Today I did a test again since curious. Looks like they remove the cap for YouTube. I can get 25Mbps+

Attached Image

I do another test to compare with last night 11pm+. This time at 8pm+ congestion is not that bad. I can get peak of 50Mbps download (green line) and 30Mbps upload (red line). Also speed average 20-25Mbps download and 20Mbps upload
Just to share here icon_rolleyes.gif

Again, the 1GB daily free quota is finished (0MB left)

Sorry I don't get why you say RM138/month for 2Mbps between 8pm-12am ? My business line is downgraded from RM128 (60GB) to RM98 (40GB) now.

I have my personal Maxis MOP98 which I can test also over the weekend but need to swap SIM card around phone and modem. I also have a hotlink prepaid as backup but never use for data. icon_rolleyes.gif

I believe if you are under plan with quota maybe you will be less "managed" by Maxis as for sure they want you to exhaust your quota fast, compared to "unlimited" plan such as hotlink 3/6 mbps or so called unlimited Maxis One Go plan
*
Unlimited with FUP up to 50GB. But I think the discussion earlier above was even before reach FUP, already throttle hotlink 3/6Mbps between 8pm-12am. Probably from data analytics, the number of users are much higher and hence they need to restrict somewhere, somehow.

Here are my speed test today with my maxis One Go plan, I am not sure how Maxis "managed" the speed is it according to how congested the network in the area?? But hey it better than 460 kbps I got few days ago
*
I suggest try do more monitoring on other hours/days. I am considering various Maxis package to sign up or not such as Maxis One Go, Maxis Home Fibre, etc. as well as from other telco such as Unifi Bebas, DiGi unlimited 150, etc. I believe Go should not restrict as per hotlink now. Let me see if I have time to test my MOP98 and will share the result if there are difference between business line and MOP for 8pm-12am.

Note: Check my last night 11pm+ I'm getting below 1Mbps download as well, but quite good upload.
