I'd recommend you to think twice on the game dev path.
I had an intern who's your senior, game development in KDU.
He had difficult time looking for internship placement in game dev industry.

For AI path, make sure you pick your internship carefully.
Normally those big corps hire junior Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer / related roles from their internship trainee.

I have to disagree with you. Please don't base your assumptions on just a singular data point.

Now, i have spoken to a few people in the game development spectrum on this (As soon as i saw this post - i sent a few casual messages out).
There are a lot of variables at work in securing an internship. Primarily, some of the studios rejected internship because there are no connection. Programming students sending internship emails to art studios and so on. Secondly, is because they lack the current skillsets that the studios require - for example - Codemasters say that there are character animation people applying to them and when asked, the interns say they do not like environment art. And certain studios prefer programmers who are familiar with certain tools.

Any btw - i know of a lot of the studios (there are some that doesn't take interns or doesn't like to take interns who are NOT in the final semester) who are looking for interns. So my guess is either you friend did not cast out the net as far as he should or doesn't have the right fit for the company.

So unless you are from the game development industry or have direct links with that industry - i suggest you don't make anecdotal comments.

I was sharing my point of view based on what I gathered from the people I met to TS.
Anyways, appreciate your effort in clarifying that with your experience in game dev industry.
I only met 2 frustrated final year students who wanted to get into game dev industry,
so my assumption was based on their experience.

Understood. But for every 2 frustrated students who wants to get into game dev industry, there are probably 10 who actualy does. Now i don't have the actual data point for that - but i do know the game development industry is constantly looking for people. I am unsure why those two couldn't get in the industry.

In fact,
one of them just finished his final semester and the result was released last month.
He obtained first class result from MMU cyberjaya,
his CGPA is around 3.8 to 4.0 (I couldn't remember).

Could you please point me some good gaming studios (KL area) based on your experience (those are still hiring) so that I can let him know about where he can try his chances.
Thanks. biggrin.gif

Wait. He graduated from MMU? What programme? I need to know that first before i know which studios to recommend.

CGPA is not an indication of quality anymore by the way. There is an apocryphal story floating around in the industry about this student (which institution, i will not name) that had a CGPA of 4.0. and went for an interview in a big studio. The studio manager was very impressed with the results and gave this girl a logic and coding test to be completed in an hour. He then left the girl to complete her test. When he came back, the girl had left without saying a word. Apparently, she gave up in the 2nd question. So much for a 4.0 CGPA.

This thread is a gem, insightful inputs from various contributors - somewhat refreshing from the usual 'which uni is better' thread. Keep it up guys!

Lemme ask him and get back to you.
Agree that CGPA is not an indication of quality anymore.

I've interviewed a few high achiever from the local U.
Quite disappointed to be honest.

It'd be better if we test on a test like Predictive Index Cognitive Test.

MMU Cyberjaya
Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.), Specialisation (Game Development)
CGPA 3.8x

Can you list some studios out so that others can try to apply too?

I will only list studios that takes in Programmers. I assume he specialised in game tech and not game design. For some strange reason - the course at MMU covers design also.

- Passion Republic (Working on own IP)
- Streamline Studios
- Metronomik
- Kaigan Games
- Ammobox
- Appxplore
- AeonSparx
- Cubinet (Publisher but might consider development)
- Gamelobb
- Kurechii
- Nightmorning
- Xhinobi

These are but a few. I would also encourage them to attend the IGDA (Malaysia) Hangouts. Actually these students should be active in some of these FB forums - i have no idea why they arent.

I'm still surveying on the AI course that MMU offered so I can't say how is it, but I do get feedbacks saying that it is not bad nod.gif

One of the reason I chose AI is like what you said, more options, are more opportunities, but since I have studied games tech during diploma I am hesitating whether I should continue to finish it, but the career outcome do worries me a bit compared to AI.( also I doubt my ability cry.gif )

BTW thanks for your advice ! I will try reaching these experts for some help!

I'm taking the AI program offered by MMU. From my POV it is not bad but it is also not too good. Some topics are interesting but not covered in depth in class, usually just an intro, but feel free to explore further yourself as there are so many resources online.

Bear in mind that machine learning involves applied math, and this AI program offered by MMU also has quite some math. PM for more.
